Despite the expected long walk from Tintern village to this out-in-the-sticks location at Trelleck Grange, we had decided to visit here for dinner. Accordingly a table was reserved well in advance.||The inn is reached by narrow lanes and there is the potential for a wrong turning to be taken. So, rather than be late for dinner (with the pub shutting early at 21:00: I think) we decided to go and find the pub in the morning. We set-off at about 11:15 and the 2.1 mile uphill slog took about an hour. Then we turned around and walked back; downhill was far easier and took almost 15 mins less.||The walk was repeated again in the evening and we arrived 15 minutes early for our table reservation at 20:00. We ordered a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which was pleasant. Incidentally this wine has improved since it first became available in the UK during the 90’s. It now has a far more delicate gooseberry flavour.||We ordered the same starter: “Avocado Pear and Prawns” in a cocktail sauce. The plate arrived with a very generous helping of prawns with a good Marie Rose sauce, some bread and butter, a small side-salad, but no avocado! Diminished enjoyment indeed, but we let it pass.||We also ordered the same main each; both choosing the “Moroccan Lamb” with couscous (the latter is nor my favourite, as I do find it very dry and under-favoured). The meat however was very tender and trimmed, and the balance of North African spices was spot-on. A small side-salad finished off what was an excellent plate.||For dessert my Partner ordered the “Chocolate Fudge Cake” with chocolate sauce and cream; this was apparently very good indeed. I ordered the “Apple Pie” with custard; this was excellent. It was accompanied by a really generous jug of piping hot, creamy and thick custard. Too much really (and I left some), but it was elemental enjoyment.||The meal was homecooked and service was excellent. At the end we were asked what we thought of the food, and we did ask about the missing avocado. The landlady went to the kitchen and brought back an avocado to show us: it was as rotten as a meddler, despite being fresh from their supplier.||This was one of the best value evening dinners we have ever had, and we fully enjoyed...

Read moreAbsolutely fantastic Sunday lunch in a lovely location.
Stumbled upon this lovely old classic pub in search of a Sunday lunch and the staff were kind enough to find us a table despite us not having a booking. The staff were all amazingly attentive and lovely to talk to. The menu was extensive, we had several roasts, a ploughmans and the ham, egg & chips. All of which were of such high quality and had great portion sizes. Not to mention the huge dessert menu that we all had to treat ourselves to!
The prices were incredibly affordable for such a lovely, high quality meal. We look forward to returning and will be recommending to all of our...
