When it comes to Aberdare and pubs, a lot is left to be desired. Generally it's the same old story across the board with pubs having badly stored beer (or a terrible selection where for ales it's John Smith's or Worthington's) that tastes horrid, rough people making you feel unwelcome and an overall bad vibe. The red cow is one of the few exceptions.
It's a friendly pub with a nice interior that also does some great food. It's dog friendly and the beer is fine there. The only reason for not getting 5/5 is due to them only having grey trees mosaic ale on tap (the rest are smooth flow Worthington's type and cold lagers). It's not a bad ale but would be nicer to have more of a choice or at least to rotate that one ale (it's a hoppy beer so fine in Summer but nicer to have a bitter or even darker ale in colder seasons).
For most of the part people are friendly but it wouldn't be Aberdare if there wasn't 1 or 2 gobby people there with a chip on their shoulder who might put a few rude comments your way (it's not a regular...
Read moreVisited from Bristol yesterday for a family lunch. What a lovely village pub. I hadn't been there in over 11 years. Beautifully clean, great service, lovely atmosphere, staff all very friendly, polite and nothing was too much trouble. No complaints on the food side. Just one FYI, portion sizes are HUGE, we had to ask for a takeaway box 🤣 we will definitely come back when we are in the Valleys again. I am looking forward to trying the Sunday lunch next time. Big thumbs up from us! Thank you.
Just one tip : always ask for a table in the bar if there's one available as the extension / conservatory part has no atmosphere.
Portion sizes are HUGE- so if you have smaller appetites, it's worth sharing a main. The kids' menu is a bit basic, so my boys aged 10 and 13 shared an adult chicken curry, which was big enough for...
Read moreGorgeous little pub. Visited on our way home for a well earned last night special dinner after a long camper van tour. Dog friendly also which was even better.
Very welcoming staff and locals. Food is great, the four of us had fish & chips, lamb burger and prawn & scallop creamy tomato pasta.
The chips were homemade, fresh battered fish, lovely homemade lamb burger and a very tasty seafood pasta dish. Everything came out looking very fresh, well cooked and presented.
Would definitely come back here again if we come past...
