I ordered homemade sweet potatoe, spinach and chickpea curry, which came with a small naan and half and half rice and home made chips. And it was lovely! Tasted fresh really enjoyed it (pub currys usually aren't the greatest but this was nice!!) It came quickly and was piping hot! And I had half a pint on inches cider and chocolate fudge cake with ice cream for dessert which was nice and it came to £22.70 so not bad! Portion sizes were good also. I ate it all 😋
They were friendly on the phone, and friendly when serving me. There is a small garden out back overlooking canal with tables etc.
Honestly I'm usually sceptical of going out to eat in the whole of Wales as usually sometimes people decide not to be open or they decide to stop serving when they want to for the day (regardless of what it says online) and been really messed over endless times with it even when checking multiple times to see if it open amd serving (and my partner is from Wales and also agrees this is a common problem), and alot of the time food can be standard.
I also heard other people on other tables who were enjoying their food aswell.
I'll deffo be back for a mini camp break again before summer/autumn is over (I stayed at the capsite just 150yrds up the road) with my partner and come bk here for food! There were apple trees along the road aswell where I may or may not have...
Read moreWhat can i say about this place, we have been on a narrow boat the last 5 days and have been to many pubs along the canel and everyone has had fantastic food and sublime service until our last night at the royal oak. First the welcome was very poor and when we sat down after about 10 mins they asked us to move, apparently they made a mistake and then sat us in a tiny both with extremely uncomfitable seats. After ordering our food it came out suspiciously quick, we ordered a gammon meal and the chicken curry. The gammon was greasy and swimming in watery juices and the chicken curry was worse than a microwave curry you buy in a supermarket. Then when the waitress could see we were not happy she seemed uninterested. Finally we asked her to just settle up the bill but she just disappeared and then she wondered off and forgot about us then we had to ask yet again to settle up we got the bill just put on our table and the land lady didnt ask anything about how was the meal even though she asked the table next to us. DISGRACEFUL. If your thinking of stopping at the royal oak i would strongly recommend a further 2 mile trip down to the white heart at talybont on usk as their food is excellent and the service...
Read moreI was very much looking forward to visiting this pub . My fiancé had been before and wanted me to experience the " loveliness" of it all . It was a hot sunny day , and we managed to get a table in the garden .....which was idyllic , seeing the narrow boats glide by on the Monmouthshire/Brecon canal . The young waitresses were delightful, very hardworking, smiles on their faces . Now, sadly some of the negatives My steak and Ale pie was cold ( sent back and a fresh one returned which was hot ) The roasted vegetables were just a mushy , slimy mess .....they didn't look roasted to me at all . I needed to use the bathroom , which meant going down some very uneven steps , with lots of loose gravel on the path ( 2 minutes with a sweeping brush could have solved this) and then there were piles and piles of rubbish thrown to one side .....such a shame because the pub itself is so nice . My partner was a bit put out too , because after our meal we decided to sit on the bench by the back gate ( bench was also filthy ) and it was cash only as our 2 drinks came to less than £5 ...so all in all not such a perfect afternoon .....mediocre food , in a...
