I really would have liked to post a good review about the Black Lion , as it is our nearest pub being only a couple of miles away, but I can only suggest don't bother going. I made a reservation for 5 people including my elderly mother in her late 80's several days before but when we turned up at the given time a couple of weeks ago a member of staff denied any booking had been made. When I mentioned I had messaged that we were bringing my Mum and said she takes her time eating as I appreciated they may be busy I could see she did recall the booking but no apology was forthcoming. The pub was empty and there was just a small group if people in the beer garden so they were hardly rushed off their feet. She disappeared into the pub to check our booking and didn't come out again. I can on the other hand thoroughly recommend the Black Lion in Llansawel who were very courteous and welcomed our custom. What was odd when we passed by after enjoying our meal the pub still looked quiet. It would also help other customers if they could be bothered to answer the phone as I would have preferred to make our booking via live voice rather than messenger. I will be telling all my local friends about this. The pictures are evidence of the booking I made which the landlady is denying ever occurred. In response to who I believe may be the landlady although I'm not sure now as she has a poltergeist responding to facebook messages. They're certainly more polite than the real thing.

Sunday lunch is a must to try at the Black Lion. And you won't be disappointed. The staff are friendly and service is quick. There is a welcoming country feel restaurant room where dogs are allowed. Starters are available but we went for the mains. The family had Brisket with roast potatoes, parsnip and Yorkshire pudding. I had a homemade mushroom pastry. All were accompanied by dishes of vegetables - cauliflower cheese, mashed swede, red cabbage with pomegranate seeds, leek, courgette and kale and carrots. We even managed to polish off some delicious homemade puddings - chocolate brioche bread and butter pudding, hazelnut and coffee cream meringue, plum and apple flapjack crumble. And all very good for the price.

Lovely cosy though slightly remote pub serving really nice local ales and excellent food. Well worth a minor detour to visit at Abergorlech. I guess it's a sign of a strained economic crisis, but this gem of a local pub is only open part of the week. Worth booking as it's not huge and only has a few tables. Good range of menu choice, based on fresh ingredients. We'll cooked, very tasty beef brisket. We hadn't chosen a starter, but we were given complimentary fresh bread and dipping oil/balsamic to keep us amused whilst waiting for our main. Even more impressed that one was a lovely gluten-free portion. Dog friendly too.

We popped along to Abergorlech Thursday evening at approximately 5pm. As usual, we planned to park in the forest car park, take the dogs for a quick walk, and proceed to the pub for drinks, possibly food. On arrival the car park was closed. I suggested to my husband and daughter that we park in the pub car park as we were going there too, at the time there were only 2 cars up against the side which I assume belonged to next door as we could see them going from the house to the car/van. As a curtesy my husband went into the pub to say that due to the car park being closed, would it be ok if we left the car in their car park, take the dogs for a quick walk and then come back for drinks. He was told "rather you didn't" and said something about hassle of being blocked in! At 5.30??? Really?? Is that what they say to all their customers? Regardless of taking the dogs for a walk we were going to the pub! We could have parked up and not said anything! Well needless to say we moved the car went elsewhere and spend £68 on drinks and food, their loss, they obviously don't need the business. We have enjoyed the pub many times and most recently the brunch. Can't bare rudeness, no matter how nice the pub is and regardless of us being only 15 minutes away, we won't be going back. There are plenty of other places we can go! Maybe they have problems with people parking and not using the pub, but we went in to...

I've been in this pub a number of times, visiting after mountain biking and looking for food and drink. On each occasion the landlady has been best described as miserable and unfriendly, with no customer service. We went in two weeks ago at about 1.00pm and the pub was half empty. She gave me an absolutely filthy look, which I ignored as she very rarely smiles anyway. Her Sunday dinner menus were all over the bar promoting dinner until 3.00. When we asked about eating, she was less than enthusiastic, told us they were really busy but she'd check with the kitchen. She slowly drew my partner's pint, we paid and waited by the bar for her to check with the kitchen. She then appeared in the bar, having walked through the kitchen and past the chef to clear a table (one of only two that was occupied) She did not acknowledge us nor the fact we were waiting for her reply. I've been in the pub in the winter when she had a table of six mountain bikers, plus myself and partner, all eating and drinking and yet she couldn't even put the woodburner on even though it was obvious how cold we all were. The landlady is incredibly rude and doesn't deserve the business. Her pub may be nice but it is definitely the last time we go there especially as less than three miles away is Llansawel where there are two excellent pubs with first class FRIENDLY service and brilliant...
