We booked a table for us to dine out with our friend, to enjoy a Sunday lunch together, having not eaten out with her for months due to illness.
The table was booked by phone on the Friday evening, and we happily paid a £15 deposit to secure our booking.
Unfortunately our friend tested positive for Covid by Saturday morning, so I promptly phoned and asked to cancel the table, I was told I could roll the deposit forward to another booking.
I explained that we lived 35 miles away in Cardiff, and were unsure of when we'd be able to re-book.
I was told not to worry, just ring and rebook when you know the date.
Admittedly, 7 weeks have now passed, but as we were heading for the area, we phoned to book, and were told that the deposit was only valid for 2 weeks, and we were told this at the time of cancelling.
This is a complete lie.
If that had been the case, I would have explained that it was unlikely to be for a while, due to the distance. Reluctantly, after some haggling, they agreed to roll £10 forward but forfeit £5 for the inconvenience and with only two guests attending instead of three. The excuse from their end was that times are hard with Covid.
We don’t need that explained to us.
Since Covid my partner’s family business has reduced dramatically (thankfully we haven’t needed to abuse customer loyalty to continue) and throughout the pandemic until today I’ve upped my hours to 50 per week.
We do not need this pointed out at all.
We'd rather you keep our £15, and never spend another penny with you if that's your attitude, than use the £10 and end up putting another £80+ in your till.
We certainly will remember this company — for all the wrong reasons.
Good luck for the future, if that's how you make your profits, you don't deserve the custom!

Read moreDisappointed tonight. First time we ate here we were also disappointed but this was right at the beginning of the Brit being open so we forgave this as a minor hiccup at the start of the business opening. We then waited for a few months and based on friends recommendation we tried again and had a lovely meal with friends. Today, sadly we went back to our first impression. We went for a romantic night out as I had been working away all week, so this was date night....
I’m dairy free and on enquiringly about what I might have was just offered vegan menu. I explained that I enjoy meat but was made to feel an inconvenience for asking whether there was something that could be adapted not using dairy products. I was told very assertively that I should just choose the vegan options. I ended up choosing vegan starter and a steak for main course as there was no other real options. Normally this is the boring default main course as it’s ‘safe’ for me to eat. Sadly, my starter was deep fried but frozen on the inside when it turned up and had to be sent back, so my husband had finished his starter before mine was re-cooked. The steak was over cooked ( I had asked for it rare to blue but was neither) and was tough with large amount of gristle running throughout. We also received poor attention from the many staff on duty. We gave up waiting to have our bill so took ourselves to the bar to pay. For the price of the meal, very disappointed. Shan’t be coming back and won’t recommend to friends. We live in the village and really welcome somewhere to go for a nice meal within walking distance. Sadly, this will not...
Read moreThe menu is packed with vegan and gluten-free options, each dish bursting with creativity and flavour, all at a very reasonable price.
From the moment we stepped in, the service was exceptional—warm, friendly, and genuinely hospitable. The atmosphere was buzzing yet relaxed, and their dog-friendly policy made us feel even more welcome. The beer garden by the river is the perfect place to unwind and take it all in.
We were lucky to visit during the final week of their current menu. For starters, we had the vegan fishcake served with garlic mayo and tomato salsa—unbelievably realistic and delicious—alongside perfectly seasoned meatless meatballs on toasted focaccia.
Our mains - The stuffed butternut squash came with creamy lentils and new potatoes, while the plant-based Tuscan chicken was a showstopper. The sauce was so divine we couldn’t resist ordering extra bread just to savour every last drop.
To finish, we enjoyed a vegan crème brûlée that was both impressive and indulgent—a flawless end to an incredible meal.
We left full, happy, and already planning our return to explore their new menu. If you're looking for phenomenal plant-based food in a welcoming setting, The Brit is absolutely worth the visit. Bonus points for the wagging tails they...
