This has to be the worst place we've eaten in. Service - we were asked what we wanted to drink, asked for diet coke and expected a fountain drink. Brought over two bottles and it was only as we were leaving that we noted they had diet pepsi on draught. We weren't advised that this was an option. We were told the people at our booked table were still eating and asked if we didn't mind eating in the bar area. We were seated in an area that we didn't know had a dog behind us. Albeit a well behaved dog, we didn't see it and weren't informed of it's presence. It's lucky neither of us suffered from allergies but I didn't like the thought of not being informed. No one asked us if our meals were ok and we were ignored in favour of other customers. All of whom were asked and were treated much better.
Food - ordered the king prawn cocktail. There were no king prawns in the dish and the tiny prawns that were there were overcooked. Likewise with my partner's salt and pepper squid, it was overcooked and bland. No real care had been made on presentation.
Then came the mains. Both of our first choices weren't available. Fair enough. My partner had the Hunters Chicken Schnitzel which is described as being covered in BBQ sauce and melted cheddar cheese. It came out and no sign of the cheddar cheese until you lifted up the fake melted burger cheese that had lathered on top. There it was, a miniscule amount underneath that. Who in their right minds puts that plastic cheese on top of what initially sounded like a tasty dish? Her chips retained a load of oil and this could only mean they were either recooked or had been cooked in oil not up to the correct temperature. Needless to say she left most of hers. My burger was served in a soggy bun that had gone soggy underneath. Again, presentation wasn't their strong suit as the burger sauce was all over the plate. I ate mine with a knife and fork. Despite mine not being worth the £17 we were charged, I ate it because, as my mum always said, I'd eat the proverbial with sugar on top. This proved that. Now, we weren't asked or approached at any point to ask if all was ok. The staff were run ragged, so, that's a possible reason for not approaching us, despite others being spoken to and offered the dessert menu, which we weren't. We were charged £56 for this and, luckily with a voucher we obtained from the company website before entering, it knocked it down to £36. We didn't complain at the time because no one was paying any attention. We paid and left. Abysmal service and food. We won't be...
Read moreMy daughter and I tried this place after a day of indecision as to where to go; and we are SO glad we did.
Tucked away in an easily-accessible location with plenty of parking space, we sat at a quiet table - they do have a dog-friendly option which we do like, but we don’t have a dog ourselves so didn’t want to take a table away from someone who might have needed it.
The menus are quite varied, which was wonderful, with some extremely appetising dishes. I had the ribeye steak, my daughter had a hoisin duck pizza.
Service is very speedy, and absolutely impeccable. Drinks and then our food arrived before we knew it, and boy, was everything cooked perfectly!
The pizza had a crispy base without being crunchy, the tomato sauce was herby, and the toppings tasty.
My steak (I always ask for medium these days in case it’s undercooked - medium rare is my preference but most of the time I ask for that, I get rare) was cooked absolutely spot-on - a fantastic crust, perfectly medium throughout which is a great achievement, honestly, and incredibly tasty. Next time I will definitely not be afraid to ask for the medium-rare!
The triple cooked chips were amazing too, seasoned really well and the perfect amount of crunch and melting softness.
My daughter had a dessert called a banoffee choux bun, which we expected to look like a giant profiterole, but instead it was like a swirl of piped choux pastry with a banana and lots of banoffee sauce and ice cream on top. It was stunning, despite not quite what we’d imagined!
I had the sticky toffee pudding and custard, and Hannah, our standout server who was amazing and who I now love, was good enough to point out that it was really a ‘diabetic jelly’ to anyone who might ask what a diabetic was doing having a dessert! It was delicious, not too sweet which I find most desserts to be even the ones that claim to be diabetic suitable, and I would thoroughly recommend it and totally not have it myself next time. (Our secret is safe, Hannah! 😜)
It is a bit expensive, definitely a “high days and holidays” kind of place for me, I feel, but they do also have some surprisingly good offers - Monday-Thursday has a two course lunch for £16.50 which is very reasonable, for example, and I will definitely be back with all my family and friends.
This place is a bit of a hidden gem, I think, the staff are amazing especially Hannah, and I’m already planning a...
Read moreI booked a reservation here to celebrate our 26th Wedding Anniversary. We arrived and had a drink outside before going in for our Meal. At first, everything seemed great; we waited over 20 minutes for menu and for our order to be taken, which was ok. We then waited 30 minutes for the starters to arrive. When they arrived I asked for water which took 15 minutes to arrive after reminding the waitress. The starter was lovely. The main then took another 30 minutes to arrive but I didn't have any cutlery as this was taken after the first course, I asked for more cutlery but this was forgotten. I had to return the steak as it was cooked incorrectly. We also asked for butter for the mashed potato and this was also forgotten. I was up and down from the table to try and grab a waitress for the items. When she returned with the steak, we asked for more water she said she would bring it as she wanted to double check all was well with the returned steak - she never returned. When the dishes for the main were cleared, we were asked if we would like the dessert menu - yes please we said. This was forgotten and again after 15 minutes of waiting for one, I had to remind a waitress to bring one. After another 20 minutes the waitress didn't return to take our order for the desserts, even though she had taken payment from people just near our table, she didn't ask about any dessert requirements from us. Whilst taking the payment from the other table she asked them if everything was ok with their meal. After she had completed this, I called her and asked her for our Bill. She didn't ask about the desserts and to be honest we couldn't put up with the levels of service anymore. She returned with the Bill. (nearly £80) and at no time did she ask us if everything was ok with OUR meal. We will not be returning to this place, Service was appalling, one Steak had to be returned and the other one was like chewing gum, it was so dry! No condiments were offered for the salad (oils or dressings) This was supposed to be an evening for celebrating our anniversary, and we ended up returning home by 9pm to have our drinks and dessert in our own back garden! Thank you Castell Mynach for a memorable evening - for all the...
