In a fabulous setting, overlooking the bridge and river, as we approached it appeared ready to provide a classic country pub experience. However, lovely as it looked, we were put off by the domination of satellite TV sports and, frankly, what we felt wasn't quite the welcome we had anticipated. With dowdily dressed and (one) gum-chewing member of staff, service at the bar lacked bonhomie and, rather, pulling a pint and pouring a drink gave the impression of being a tiresome chore. We made the mistake of ordering plaice, chips, and peas. The chips and peas were ok, but the plaice was so dry that the cynic in me thought it might have been coming round for a second time; unlikely, I know, but at that price it really ought to have been better. The experience wasn't enhanced by two blokes standing at the bar watching a video on a mobile phone at such a volume that, had one actually wanted to have watched the TV, it would have been futile to have tried; sadly, the staff either seemed immune to the distraction or disinclined to challenge them. Seemingly, the two blokes had little or no concept of how to respect others' space. We had already realised we didn't want to linger here and this thought was reinforced further when, during the course of our meal, a member of staff approached the table with a little slip of paper bearing some writing and a time, lifted the salt cellar to secure the slip, and declared that the table was reserved in 20 minute's time. (Did I detect a ceremonial note of joy in the delivery [rhet])? Thankfully we had finished and taken our leave by then. In summary, to us The Grouse lacked the charm and warmth for which we had hoped, and we were already looking forward to supper at home as we departed. Please, smarten up and smile. Next time, if there is a next time, we'll...
Read moreMy family and I have enjoyed a week away in Corwen, North Wales, visiting a number of local attractions. The natural beauty of the landscape in this locale is something I have really enjoyed and will continue to do so with wonder memories of our brief stay.
On the eve of our final day, we decided to remain fairly local to our delightful holiday let and eat out. With the River Dee on a few metres from its doorstep, The Grouse Inn had an immediate appeal, and dog friendly, too.
In light of the fact we were a party of eight people, we phoned and reserved a table and were pleased the staff were able to accommodate us at relatively short notice. We were able to park in the pub grounds with easy access to the main bar and restaurant.
We were shown to our table and within a few minutes ordered drinks. The food menu provided a broad selection of meals and catered for the more fussy younger members of our family.
We ordered a selection of meals including; Chicken Curry, Steak and Stout Pie, Chicken and Leak Pie, Jacket Potato. The children were also well catered for with chunky chips, Sweet Potato fries and thick slices of garlic bread. It was evident within a couple of mouthfuls our that the food was freshly prepared and with a healthy quantity of good quality meat within our adult dishes. I enjoyed a few of the chunky chips and a slice of garlic bread, which was very tasty, too. Only one of our party had room for dessert, which looked and apparently tasted lovely.
The entire experience at The Grouse Inn, including a ten minute walk around the bank of The River Dee was very enjoyable and very good valid for money. In the event we are able to return at some future, I am in no doubt that The Grouse Inn will feature in our plans. We'll done team,...
Read moreThis little gem of a place left me utterly spellbound. The breathtaking vista of the north Welsh countryside on a splendid day, accompanied by a gentle breeze and the sun's radiant glow, made it the perfect setting for an unforgettable pub lunch.
The unique canopies outside not only shielded us from the sun's rays but also provided a serene space for us to unwind and savor our meal in tranquility…
The food was nothing short of extraordinary, the drinks were exceptional, and the staff went above and beyond to deliver outstanding service with genuine warmth and hospitality.
This establishment is a haven for all young adventure-seeking whippersnappers who wish to immerse themselves in the splendor of nature while treating their taste buds to a culinary delight. On this particular day, we were fortunate enough to witness a captivating scene unfold in the distance—an assortment of cars crossing a small bridge. A Range Rover driver, exemplifying empathy and compassion, graciously allowed others to pass before him, even reversing halfway across the bridge to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Such acts of kindness and consideration are a testament to the remarkable human spirit.
The garlic bread here transcended all culinary expectations I have ever had. Its texture was a harmonious blend of crispy, soft, and tender, creating an otherworldly experience for my taste buds.
The pub offers ample opportunities to witness such captivating events. I simply cannot recommend any other place more highly than this extraordinary...
