We were staying the night in a nearby B&B, which was lovely! As it was in close proximity to the Wheatsheaf Inn it seemed silly to drive out of the village to eat, so on a local recommendation we gave it a go. What a strange place, we arrived at the time we had booked for (10 mins early in fact) to be greeted at the bar by the landlady who was sullen to say the least. She organised our drinks and disappeared so we went around the other side of the bar as this looked more like a restaurant area and sat ourselves down at a table (there was no one else in this part of the pub) after 15 mins or so a young man came to us and asked us if we would like to follow him to the restaurant, which is upstairs. The restaurant is a bit odd, there was sixties music playing on a CD player which was on a little table in front of the bar, and no one else in the restaurant at this point (7.15pm), there has obviously been some modernisation recently, new, very modern looking bar, new dining chairs, but very old tables in very poor condition (a simple table covering would have remedied this in an instant). A very pleasant young lady came and took our food order and when our starters arrived they were very nice (Pate/prawn cocktail), when our mains arrived after a short time, the haywain chicken was very nice, but the curry which was chicken tikka masala was absolutely swimming in oil or ghee, not sure which as it just tasted like lard!! and the 'home cooked chips' are definitely frozen chips which was a disappointment as we thought this was an indication of 'real' chips. We decided to leave dessert and coffee as the curry was starting to repeat, so we decided to ask for the bill, it took a very long time to get the attention of the waitress, but when we did she brought the bill promptly. We then had to go through the process of getting her attention again as we wanted to pay by card, to which she told us to pay downstairs! We went downstairs, there was nobody behind the bar, so we stood there for 10 minutes until the young male waiter appeared and mumbled something about getting the machine and left us for another 10 minutes! When he eventually returned he told us that Mary (the landlady - I think) would come 'in a few minutes' to process our payment, so another 10 minutes went by, when she eventually appeared she looked a bit cross at having to deal with us and took the payment from us, muttering to herself whilst she did so!!||All in all, the food on the whole was ok, the young waiting staff would benefit from a little more training in customer service, but the landlady could do with realising that she is sitting on a potential goldmine, and smile at...

This place is hilariously bad. I took a drive out yesterday with my husband who is disabled and walks with a stick so we don’t get out much, so when we do it’s a treat. Pub was empty (I know why). So we order food and it’s a beautiful day so sit outside. Twenty minutes later someone shouts from inside the pub “Your dinners ready”. What! So I go inside and ask could we eat outside.. response was a very grumpy ‘ I’ve set the table inside we are not use to people eating outside’. So I carry the plates and cutlery outside. We ordered Pie of the day. Steak and Ale. No, it was some cheap steak and kidney from the freezer, rubbery pastry and frozen chips. What on earth are these people thinking. A beautiful setting and a beautiful Pub sadly the Food and Service was beyond bad and in fact I could do nothing but laugh. I thought perhaps it’s a theme pub where you go to be insulted or treated badly. If this is the case You’ve got it spot on! I did not bother to complain for the simple reason they are totally aware of how bad they are and don't care its a simple as that. Also this was a treat for my husband so to get out of this place a soon as possible was my...

We tried to have a meal here on Tuesday as it was listed as dog friendly. After negotiating the twists, turns and hills to get there my husband went in beforehand to check it was indeed dog friendly. He was greeted by a rude woman who told him that dogs were allowed in the back area, ok this was fine, he then asked if they were yet serving food as this was just before 5pm, and only 2 other people in the place, he then got told No-no food to dogs today, he then smiled and said `no I meant for us my dog eats his own food at home', to then be told NO to dog owners today!!! erm hello no signs up saying no food to dog owners on a Tuesday. Very rude and clearly don't want to serve any non-locals. Their loss as we would have spent quite a bit as it was an anniversary meal. Am posting this on all dog friendly sites as well as no point people going to be turned away like we were. For the record our dog is a small dog only 6 months old but well behaved but we weren't even asked what kind of dog so we weren't turned away for any other reason...
