We live locally in Caerwys and I recently discovered the white horse inn in Cilcain, it was closed at the time but it looked like an absolutely beautiful place, a hidden gem, so i planned to bring my family for a lunch the next weekend it was open. Today we turned up and my family were blown away with how nice the place looked and how nice the pub itself looked. When we got to the bar we were greeted with stern faces, no pleasantries and rushed into ordering drinks, when we asked for a couple of samples of the ale on offer it seemed as though we'd asked them to sell the pub and it was all to much trouble. We left a tip which was less than graciously recieved and thrown into the pot. We sat down and I went to ask for menus, I was ignored twice after politely asking. I don't know if they were just having a bad day or they just couldn't be bothered, or possibly our Liverpool accents offended them. I appreciate the fact that places get busy, I appreciate the fact that people can't be two places at once, but feeling totally unwelcome and ignored is quite offensive and is not what hospitality is about. So all in all we came away without finishing our drinks and feeling pretty disappointed after looking forward to a nice afternoon there, not a very pleasant experience and they lost business as we decided not eat there and go elsewhere to...
Read moreLovely pint of Polly’s on draught, but couldn’t have been made to feel more unwelcome by the middle-aged, miserable bar-man/owner/landlord (whatever he is). My question of, ‘do you have any more tables next door?’, rudely responded with ‘it’s the restaurant next door, it’s full.’ while looking like someone had just thrown his cat out a 12th story window. I proceeded next door, just to see what it was like as it seemed like a lovely pub, with a lot of character (unlike the bar-man/owner/landlord), and behold, there was an empty table, what were the chances. We were looking at the food menu, as they has ample Gluten Free options available, and even before we could ask anything about the food, we got a very abrupt ‘WE’RE FULLY BOOKED AND WE CLOSE AT 3.’ I thought, dear me, this man woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. I decided there and then, that I actually didn’t want anything to do with this establishment, even with it’s decent dietary options. I’d rather cook a full Sunday roast from scratch than talk to the extremely un-hospitable man again. Not a pleasant experience, and will definitely not...
Read moreThis is a cracking pub and if your walk or ride passes anywhere near you should pay a visit, very welcoming staff and lovely warm (fire) and cosy.
The above review was 2 years ago and I gave a 5star review.
Today 2nd Jan 2023 I couldn't even give 1 star, although forced to give at least 1 by Google. After a lovely walk around our local area we (2 families,5 children) returned to the White Horse pub, which only had a few people inside. We asked for a table for food, only to be rejected, we asked if we could get a drink and the landlord replied "depends how many children you have", baffles me how anyone seeking custom can ask such a question. clearly this isn't a place any longer to frequent for us and I will feed this back to our wider friends base. Such a shame as previously loved finishing walks and heading here. Personally I don't like leaving detrimental reviews for businesses but when you turn custom away for the above reason this one is deserved.
