Highs and lows. Nice restaurant and excellent service. Some of the dishes and food were very good. Olives were very good. But for a £5 they should be. Starters were all promising. The potato gnocchi was excellent and the chocolate torte for desert was also outstanding. But some of the other dishes were just well short at the price point. The lamb hotpot was disappointing, a bit watery and fatty. The pork belly was well cooked and tasty but served just with lentils and you really needed side dishes to make it a full meal. Anyway, we were having a good meal on the whole. But then the cheese plate for dessert was an a tiny serving of literally 3 mouthfuls of cheese. All the cheeses were tasty but with a £5 supplemental you’re talking about a £15 plate, which was just too little actual cheese. I did mention it but the explanation was that the cheese was very expensive. Well it certainly was. My overall opinion was a nice meal but rather ambitiously priced for me to want to return.

What a find for a gluten/dairy free person! I had lots of choice, making the staff aware on booking over the phone and then on arrival they didn't need reminding which was a lovely touch. They were knowledgeable and attentive for intolerances/allergies. I had the celeriac to start (pictured) which hadn't needed to be adapted too much for me (was offered a choice of 2/4 starters) and then the salmon as a main (3/6 mains could be adapted). The GF/DF dessert was also a delicious nut crumble with vegan ice cream. All in all so pleased! My other half enjoyed his blue steak, and Ragu for start. Both of us were left comfortably full - portion sizes were perfect to not feel overly stuffed at the end. The staff were amazing, it was a shame we couldn't give them a tip via our card as it was cash only (I haven't carried cash in years) and they definitely deserved one! The atmosphere felt special and rustic, definitely an evening out to remember.

To be perfectly honest, our visit to Y Polyn restaurant was a bit of a mixed bag. While we appreciated the pleasant interior and the attentive service, we were disappointed by the food preparation. Although the dishes looked promising, each one seemed to be lacking that extra something - whether it was overcooked or needed more flavor. For a restaurant with such potential, especially in this area of Wales, it was a letdown. In addition to the food, our seating by the boiling hot radiator affected the atmosphere negatively, detracting from our overall enjoyment of the meal. We believe that if Y Polyn wants to justify its prices, they need to elevate the quality of their food and consider the comfort of their guests when assigning seating. Overall, while there were some positives, our experience fell short of expectations. We hope that Y Polyn takes this feedback into consideration to improve in the future.

Checked the review before we booked a table as we normally do. The lady, who served us was really friendly and the rest could be much friendlier if we had ordered more drinks. The food was very disappointing. I believe the chef had put lots of effort into preparing it. However, I'm sorry to say the result left much to be desired. Starters were ok. We liked the duck with plum sauce. My steak is nothing special. It was no better than a random pub steak we had the night before. My son, an avid good steak lover, didn't show much interest in my dish. The specially prepared sauce didn't go with steak at all. A normal peppercorn sauce would have sufficed. My husband's lamb is very dry. It tasted like somebody had shredded a piece of over-cooked lamb last night and slapped it together somehow. For the price they charge, I don't think it is acceptable!

Found Y Polyn in the Michelin Guide whilst researching places to visited during a short break in South Wales. We visited on a Sunday lunchtime and were very impressed particularly at the price of £45 a head for three courses, a bargin for this level of cooking. My highlights were the shaved Wye Valley aspargus and rocket salad starter served with loads of shaved parmesan, amazingly crispy croutons and a wonderfully lemony dressing; and the baked white chocolated cheese cake served with roasted plums and ice cream, super indulgent! Its a shame this restaurant is so far from my house as I would be a regular if it was closer.

Absolutely outstanding meal at Y Polyn recently. Haven’t been in the last few years and it was definitely worth the trip. Had the Tagliatelle to start at the portions are more than Generous. Could pass for a main meal and really delicious freshly made pasta. Main course was the Hake, which was cooked to perfection! Would definitely recommend ordering a side of the tender stem broccoli with pine nuts. A bit on the pricier side but the quality makes it totally worthwhile. Saw some wonderful looking deserts during our visit so might swap the pasta for something sweet next time. Will definitely be back soon!
