Really sad to say our first experience of this place was disappointing. We came here at 5.30 on a Wednesday evening.
This pub is in a beautiful setting especially in the summer as it is right next to the canal. We wanted something special for my mother in law's birthday and booked an outdoor dining hut.
The dining huts only sit 4 comfortably due to the size of the tables and we were 6 people. The lights in the hut didn't work also.
On arrival we were told that they had run out of or running low on quite a few dishes on the menu. There were just 2 steak left and 3 of our party were hoping to order steak. Nonetheless we ordered even though it was around 45 mins after sitting down before the order was taken. We ordered starters and mains as we were hungry.
The meals arrived about 30 minutes after ordering. But it was around 2 hours after sitting that the mains finally arrived. The hake had too much mash on it, the steak was mediocre at best and the lamb was underwhelming. I did enjoy my asian salad though.
We were confused as to why there was a wait as the place did not appear overly busy and we didn't get an apology for the wait.
When the mains were cleared we explained to the Assistant Manager Jacob what we thought of the meal and service. He was apologetic and he offered us deserts and coffees by way of an apology.
We came to leave and my father in law went to pay the bill. Jacob greeted him in the bar and asked the bar man to sort out the bill. My father in law paid the bill and noticed that the coffees and deserts had been charged for. Too embarrassed to mention it, he just paid it.
I was not happy with that so approached Jacob to ask him what his intention was with the deserts and coffees. He confirmed that they should not have been on the bill and berated himself for forgetting to remove them.
This was the final straw.
We are currently in a labour shortage and I have worked in hospitality and know that there are times when a bad shift happens and things go up the swanny. However this time I am unsure whether this was an attitude issue or a training issue.

Booked a table for my partners 30th birthday- checked with staff upon booking around allergens. They said they could cater for ALL allergens! I asked specifically about soy and dairy and was told yes they could cater.
Arrived on my partners birthday, was told table wasn’t ready.
Eventually sat at table, waiting staff didn’t introduce or say hi, just plonked menus down.
Upon taking out orders, the topic of allergens came up- we were the told that no they can’t cater for dairy and soy allergens as everything on the menu has both in.
The waitress then told us that they had called to talk about booking and there was no answer- checked my call log and no call was ever missed! So an outright lie!
My biggest complaint is with the effort of the waitress/managing staff! Appalling attitude, basically made out I was liar for apparently not answering the phone (which wasn’t true) and essentially argued with a paying customer and table of 13 people with 3 children present! Completely ruined my partners birthday!
I have never been spoken to with such contempt as a paying customer in my life anywhere!
No apology for their mistake was ever given, and no reconciliation reached. The allergen meal arrived and consisted of peas, a piece of white fish and some tinned beans! To even reach the conclusion of obtaining a meal was like gaining a PhD from Harvard! It was so complex!
Food took over an hour to arrive and god when it did it was abysmal!
I had pizza and it was salty, bland and the dough was like toast- not a pizza consistency!
Burger meat was cheap tasting!
I would overall avoid this place at all costs!
If you have a dog and are desperate for somewhere to have a drink whilst passing- it’s fine!
If you want food or a modicum of professional service do...
Read moreWhen you think of lovely pubs set in the countryside. Take your dog for a walk along the canal and then sit down for a couple of pints. Tom o the wood ticks every box. Situated off the old Warwick road next to the canal. This beautiful country pub isn’t just set in a great location the food they serve is as good as the views. From sandwiches for lunch and Sunday roasts and the evening meal they really do have you coming back for more. We don’t go fare away with out our beautiful lab honey so finding places that cater for our furry family is a must, (there’s even a menu for dogs). We have eaten lunch and Sunday dinners here before but this was our first time for evening meal. We shared a starter onion Bhaji with a sticky chilli dip. It was so nice. Probably the best I have tasted. (See empty plate pic) for mains I had the homemade steak and kidney pudding and the good lady had fish and chips. My pudding was so old school pudding with lovely gravy and creamy mash. Ticked every flavor box. The fish was cooked in a thin batter so not to stodgy it was really home cooked food. When you walk away from a place looking forward to the next meal there you no it’s a great place. Real time is taken to make you feel welcome. When you live in bham it’s a bit escape the rat race enjoy lovely food and relax next to the water. With your best friend who will also have met a few new friends too.
