The Red Lion pub was very nicely decorated with Winnie the Pooh information on the walls giving a talking point. The staff operated a 1 way system in the pub and were timely toward the wife and l attending. Although we did not book all guests were seated with social distance in mind. Situated towards the middle of Ashdown forest the menu was reasonable but a little expensive for pub food. Car park and over flow car park were ample but a little bumpy. Menu scalable. The wife and l had a nice cooked venison pie with mash £17.95 and a Ribeye steak £25 with some of the best chips we have ever had. My wife's mixed berry pavlova was worth all £7 charged for it but the apple crumble l would say quite lame £7 for a small portion not so good portion size. I could have eaten two, the apple almost puree not pieces. The vanilla custard was very good. I would recommend the pub. The young waitress said they were in a chain of 3 and worked at the bull hence the uniform she had on. Smart, pretty and attentive to detail. Toilets average but clean. Huge marquee in garden area. Downside, smoking area directly outside exit so if non smoker as l am you walked through others second had smoke not pleasant unfortunately. Would have been better to clearly label different location....
Read moreAmazing pub. Very friendly staff who are more than welcoming. You feel completely at ease from start to finish. Service is fast and staff are more than happy to accommodate whatever you ask for. The pub is situated in such a beautiful location, the garden is spacious and well maintained. Kids can play on the play equipment.
The food was on another level. Without any shadow of doubt, this was the best roast dinner I’ve ever eaten. Everything was cooked phenomenally well. All meat perfect, roast potatoes crispy and fluffy, vegetables not overcooked and still have a bite to them. If I could shake the chefs hand I would! I’ve eaten at a fair share of pubs (in this area) over the years and this is miles ahead of every other venue by a long way. Fantastic selection of beers too.
Prices are just above average but for the quality and quantity you get, it’s well worth it. I eat ALOT of food and I came away full which says it all!
Don’t change what you are doing Red Lion!Thankyou for a wonderfully British afternoon! My wife’s dad is over from Dubai and wanted the perfect roast dinner… You guys delivered that and more!
Thankyou. Every pub in the area should be...
Read moreWe rode over to the Red Lion with friends. My wife is vegetarian and therefore, from the limited option, she chose macaroni cheese. At £16 plus £1.50 for bacon this seemed a bit steep but that was what she wanted (without the bacon because she’s a vegetarian). As she began to tuck into the meal she discovered pieces of meat and was somewhat distraught so we returned the meal. We were offered a glass of wine or a refund and since a glass of wine was far less than £16 dish we asked for a refund.
My wife continued to feel upset about her dining experience. It wasn’t helped when a young female staff member was sent out to explain that the chef had earlier been slicing a ham and cheese toastie and probably had a piece of ham on the knife.
This did not leave us feeling confident about the kitchen hygiene if utensils used to prepare meat are subsequently use to prepare vegetarian meals without appropriate cleaning.
We’ve had super experiences at other local pubs. We’ve no plans to return to...
