We recently spent two nights at The Bear Inn, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish! From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the warm, rustic ambiance and friendly staff. The inn has a perfect balance of coziness and charm, making it ideal for both a relaxing stay and a fun evening out. Our room was comfortable and well-equipped, with everything we needed to make our stay enjoyable. The bed was cozy, the bathroom spotless, and the little extras, like complimentary tea and coffee, were a lovely touch. We felt right at home and appreciated the attention to detail. The on-site dining was fantastic as well. We enjoyed a refined dish of mussels with cider, which was perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor—a true highlight of the menu. The rest of the menu offers a great selection, and you can tell each dish is crafted with thought and care. Generous portions, beautiful presentation, and very reasonably priced. We also loved the selection of ales on tap, which added to the authentic pub experience. Each ale we tried was fresh and full of character, and it was clear they take pride in offering high-quality local brews. Overall, The Bear Inn exceeded our expectations. It’s the kind of place where quality and service come together seamlessly, and it’s clear the staff takes pride in making guests feel at home. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable meal, quality ales, and a cozy stay in a welcoming environment. We’ll definitely be back! Rating: 5/5

£120 for a night, absolutely not worth it in my opinion. The only good thing I can say is the bed was comfortable. The room was dirty, there were skid marks on the toilet when we arrived, the bathroom stank. I really wanted a shower having been drenched in the rain but it wasn't clean and the smell was disgusting. The towels and bath mats were heavily stained. My pillow was also stained so I didn't use it. There was a fan in the room but low and behold it didn't work and they knew it didn't work as it had been tapped back together so the room was unpleasantly warm. Stains all over the carpets and walls, just needed a thorough clean. Breakfast - the table was dirty, my cup was dirty, my plate had hairs on it, the coffee jug was gross. I asked for scrambled eggs (just scrambled eggs, didn't want toast) I was served "scrambled egg" on toast, the eggs weren't cooked properly and were very runny and just tasted like milk. The people were nice enough but the cleanliness off this place put me off, if I hadn't had a long day and was tired, I would have driven home and not stayed.

Stopped by this lovely old pub on the way home from Alfriston. The staff were all polite, honest, friendly and eager to make sure your visit was a pleasant one, especially the floor manager called Ian. Now, I never expect too much from pub/gastro food and nor should we except to have a decent meal outside the spectrum of restaurants. You have probably heard by now that I am a chef (actor too) and as a chef I can assure you that the pub food here is superb. The King Prawns I had as a starter are, as we know, easy to prepare but the sauce and the accompaniments that came with it made it A1 plus. The burger, I had for the main course was without a doubt, one of the best I've tasted, with gorgeous chips, salad and coleslaw. Well done that pub for completing an enjoyable day with a delightful evening meal. Also, they have an excellent choice of wines to wash down said gastro food. Yum, yum. Both my wife and I have content tummies.

We’ve been coming to Hartfield for over 40 years, we drive quite a long way to get there. We would visit this little pub as it was always so friendly and welcoming, sadly not this time? Me and my 89 yr old Mum just wanted a coffee. We entered the pub to find most of the chairs on the tables (It wasn’t too early) and a staff member flushing out the pumps. Was it closed?

The staff member totally ignored us, with no smile, welcome, no eye contact, no offer of help, service or communication? I tried another member of staff? Another unfriendly member of staff? What’s going on we wondered? We got our coffees. We then read signs in the pub saying we must add our cars registration onto their iPad or you’ll get a fine? I explained Mum was a Blue badge holder where it was explained we’d still need to add car registration. The parking website for the pub car parking wasn’t working. When we told the staff member (The one ignoring everyone?) she said “It was!” Abruptly! It wasn’t! Another couple were being ignored when asking too, why was this happening? We then had to ask for receipts to prove we’d been patrons of the pub in case we were fined! This was given not offered by a grim, unfriendly member of staff! We later found out the rude member of staff who ignored us all was the pubs manager?

It’s such a shame as we’d had so many happy memories in the pub. I can honestly say don’t bother visiting The Bear (Formerly the Anchor) it’s not worth the unfriendly welcome and rude behaviour...

We visited for our birthday's, staying in Pooh's Room for three nights, eating there twice.

It's in a gorgeous part of the country, and the 'inn' is a lovely building. The bar was busy when we arrived but we were checked-in efficiently.

The room was lovely - the Winnie-the-Pooh wallpaper a cute addition - and it was clean and comfortable.

Food was great throughout. Everything we had in the evening was delicious. Both of us were gluten free and there were options. The restaurant was very busy both nights we ate there - which must be a good sign. The bar was also busy every evening, I presume it's the 'local', but service was always quick. Breakfast was good. The breakfast included was more on the light side, but we were always still full from the evening before, it wasn't too much of an issue. You can order (and pay for) more if you wish.

Staff were great. Everybody was so friendly, but a special shoutout must go to Dean who was fantastic. Great service, made us laugh so much, and served with the perfect level of sass 🙌🏼

I mentioned we were gluten free when making the booking, and they went out of their way to put gluten free biscuits in the room for our arrival. I also mentioned it was our birthday's, and we returned to a bottle of Prosecco. Just a fantastic place 👍🏼

I'm not sure how long since it re-opened, but from some conversations I heard, it's only been a few weeks so take any reviews from before Summer 2024 with a...
