I visited the Duke Of York Inn Iddesleigh, with a friend on Saturday 8th July 23 and witnessed a shocking display by the staff. A group of people were shown to a table next to us who had an adorable 5 month old puppy. There where at least 3 other dogs in the area so one would assume this was a dog friendly pub, the puppy barked a couple of times even though I am sure none of the other punters minded the puppy being in there. The lady with the puppy was trying to introduce the puppy to the other dinners dogs which would have stopped the barking however was quickly told by the owner that the dogs where not friendly so an introduction was not wise. A staff member came to the table demanding the food order even though the group had only just sat down. When one of the ladies in the group explained that they had only just sad down and not had a chance to look at the menu the staff member said they must hurry up as the puppy was barking and they needed the table, I thought this was strange as the group had only just been shown to the table so to me this just looked like the staff kicking these customers out!! The staff member was very abrupt and rude to this group of people and all because the puppy was barking (on occasion) which only started due to the other dogs who was clearly friends of the staff. I do not know why she could not have given them a chance as the puppy’s reaction was rather normal and would not have lasted, I could honestly not believe how rude she was to them! So much so my friend and I left too. We are here for a 4 night stay and this pub will receive no more business from...
Read moreFirst time visit tonight, after a recommendation from our neighbours. Absolutely loved it. After living in mid Devon for 3 years, we had the best meal out since living here. The food was fantastic! The lamb shank and steak and kidney pudding were perfectly cooked and delicious. The real ale (Otter) was a new one to me, but a perfect session ale. Lots of real ales to try behind the bar. The staff were excellent, very welcoming and friendly. The other customers, older and younger, most likely locals and a few visitors, equally friendly and smiley and welcoming. A pub full of character, warmth and history too. A real treat and a huge thank you for a fantastic evening. We feel we have found our goto pub now. A pub we can confidently take visiting family and friends to for top notch food, drinks and atmosphere, only 20 mins away. See you again soon. So much on the specials board to try...
Read moreMy first recollections of the Duke were about 60 years ago.....my birthday and being given a glass pig by Mrs Rafferty. My Godfather and I payed darts with two regulars, we had a wonderful meal.....think there was a sweet trolly and there was no limit on it! In those days, if you wanted roast beef it was Wednesday..... fish on Friday....... if you didn't want that, what would you like to eat?....well you had better come on Thursday....... The bar was knocked through into a room on the right as numbers went up, the lovely floor was lost but apart from that... It's just the same but with a huge menu, I think Jamie sorted that, or was it the couple some before, he was tall and thin and won publican of the year (?) and she was a super cook! Think they had a daughter.... The atmosphere is just as good and I still enjoy going there,I am so glad things don't change too much,...
