Arrived at 6pm for food. Order took. Took a long time to come out. Gammon was a thick piece of bacon. Ham , egg and chips. Ham was in very small circle pieces , egg was burnt on the outside hard yoke and cold. Chips hard but they were hot. Stilton sauce with the steak not only came when steak had nearly gone, after asking staff several times for it, but was awfull, a bitter rind taste but apart from that was cream. Childrens food came last out, asked for a teaspoon for beans as children only 3 and 4. Waitress said absolutely then after 10 minutes I went to the bar and she was chatting to 2 other staff and young men who were drinking at the bar. I said we were still waiting for teaspoons. She said absolutely. Then still waited. Beans were cold by the time spoons arrived. Every time we looked for the 2 young girl's that were waitress's they were behind the bar chatting. We asked for a pudding menu. They came out with pad and told us the puddings. Took order and waited over 30 minutes to be told one of the puddings were now gone. Then nearly another 20 minutes for them to arrive. The George hotel deserves better . Hatherleigh deserves better. They did have other tables eating but were not busy by any means. I used to work at the George when it was owned by Mr and Mrs Giles and every night we would have over 50 covers weekend'al more, and the service to the customers were second to none. I'm told apart from when a chef called Richard is cooking the food is prepared by young inexperienced staff. The manager orders cheap food which is mostly frozen. Every time you ask the staff anything their response is , you guessed it absolutely. Come on the manager of the George buck your ideas up and make the george something you can be proud of.Train your staff better and employ staff that want a job , not just a paid social life. Can this be done ABSOLUTELY.
