I'm not sure how to approach this review because it was all a bit strange....firstly I would like to say that the food is amazing. Come here for the food, not the service. Which leads me to the negatives. The staff have been asked to put Covid precautions in place, however the precautions are completely useless. Moving on; There were two of us eating and the chap brought over the tray with the cutlery and made a point of saying that the condiments were also on the tray. Which comprised of one small sachet of salt and one of pepper. We waited a further twenty minutes for the drinks to arrive. The food was ordered and came quite quickly. The server, a young girl, asked if we would like sauces, we both asked for Ketchup. She returned with one sachet of Ketchup, that's one sachet between the two of us?! When asked why she thought that this was acceptable she replied that she was only allowed to offer one sachet because if we didn't use the second it would have to be thrown away. So....here's a note to the manager/proprietor; Ease off of your staff, the face coverings you've asked them to wear are absolutely ineffective. They look ridiculous and the staff don't want to wear them and from the customers we spoke to they aren't too fussed either. Oh and a final thought....give out the damn condiments. They cost you pennies. Just give...
Read moreWe've visited a lot of pubs for lunch on our trip to Dartmoor, but this one was our favourite- to the point we almost went straight back for dinner! It's a very pretty, old pub with multiple rooms and a fire place. The staff were lovely, charming very helpful. They had some interesting wines, including a Tomanian Pinot Noir. The highlight though is the food. Not only is the menu varied, but pretty much everything that came out was absolutely excellent. The chicken and leek tart is not what told usually expect, but much more interesting- big chunks of chicken, blue cheese and caramelised leeks piled up in a pastry case. They're renowned foe their steak pies, with good reason. Great chips. The only food item I wouldn't recommend is the cheese and pickle baguette; it was more a large, (slightly dry) roll than a baguette. A decent mature cheddar works better sliced than grated in a baguette, as it just spills out and makes it seem like cheap supermarket cheese, and the pickle was served on the side, so you were literally aerved a roll with grated cheese in. It was all just a bit insipid. Absolutely every other thing about this pub is so good we could forgive that though. We'd be here all the time if we lived a bit closer! Thanks for a...
Read moreWe went in October 2024 for lunch with family.
The Peter Tavy is a very popular pub on the edge of Dartmoor, and known for its ambience and excellent food. It's an old Inn and was complete with low ceilings, fireplaces, and wooden beams . We'd booked a table as we know it can be busy, and the team at the pub were expecting us.
For myself, I had the Ham, Egg and Chips, and I can honestly say that it was the best ham I have ever been served in a pub, and I don't normally heap praise like that easily. The eggs were good, too, as were the chips. I also had a couple of pints of Tavistock Golden Ale, which is brewed locally and is a really good, bitter, beer. I live in Canada and miss a good English pint, so the Golden Ale was real high point my fortnight in the UK.
The service was excellent; fast and efficient with very friendly staff.
I can't speak to prices as the meal was paid for us, but I believe the bill was quite reasonable.
The pub is a little off the beaten track (you get to it seemingly through a farm yard), but it's well...
