Booked a 2 night stay to go walking on the moors.||The positives of this place are the friendliness of the young staff and the planting around the pub. Food is good and location is fab.||Onto the negativesâŚ. The building is literally falling apart. There is rubbish everywhere, furniture is fit for a skip and the cleanliness questionable. At one point there was water pouring through the ceiling into the main pub. Apparently this is a regular thing if the guests of the room above have a long shower.||The roomâŚ. Small as we were expecting but the bathroom is so small itâs difficult to manoeuvre around and inorder to sit on the toilet, you have to do so almost sideways!||There is a raised decking area right outside the window with seating so unless you want to listen to the drunken ramblings the window needs to be kept shut. Also the curtains closed.||All of the above would not be enough for me to leave a bad review, we would have just accepted it as a learning experience and accepted that at the end of the days itâs budget accommodation.||ButâŚ.. on the second night we were made aware of a 70âs night. Not our thing but itâs a pub so expect there to be noise which is fine. However the noise and base was so loud and unbearable! The room was vibrating and even with the tv volume was on the loudest in the room, we were unable to hear it. At 11:45pm we had had enough and went down to ask what time the music would stop as it was ridiculous! To be fair to the guy I spoke to, he was friendly and apologetic but didnât know what time it would finish.||By midnight we had had enough and packed to leave. Went down to hand our key in and asked to speak to the manager. Absolutely abysmal narcissistic attitude from this vile man. Not sure if he was very drunk or on something but was not acting like a rational human being. His response to our complaint was âitâs a pub what do you expectâ âthe event is on all our socialsâ (it was only on their fb 2 days before the event and after we had booked!) and âwe have a licence until midnightâ which is not what it says on their website and as itâs a pub in a very closely confined quaint little village is surprising if true.||Ultimately dont book to stay here as paying guests are obviously seen...

great authentic 17th Century space, very cosy, staff all local and very helpful. Place is in the middle of a major refurb but that didn't spoil our stay. Also in the middle of a sweet village. For walking or exploring Dartmoor it's perfect, all day out and about then back to a very cosy pub, with a superb home made menu. Pies in particular worth working your way though...All the food was good, again portions are generous. We had the small twin room, and it is small, if you're a large person ( like me) there's a bit of too-ing and fro-ing to get in and out of the shower etc, but at the end of the day after a long days walking the bed was very comfortable, the shower powerful and hot and the space cosy. But if you book the twin room be aware, there's little space in the room. The linen, towels etc all very nice quality, and we wanted a comfortable bed to sleep in after walking all on the moors. It certainly works for that. Easy enough to park in the village and the atmosphere in the place was very welcoming ( and busy for food on the weekend), breakfast was hearty, generous and well cooked, with local produce and plenty of fresh coffee. WiFi was fine, complementary toiletries nice quality and tea/coffee etc in the room. Anything else we wanted, was given swiftly. We would certainly go back and stay as the place was super cosy, quiet and laid back. Place is LGBTQ+ friendly and staff all fairly young. Got some lovely tips for local river walking from one of them, which was a highlight...
