Strolled in with my girlfriend on a September Saturday, mid-walk on a brief break in the Cotswolds. Lovely warm and friendly welcome from the Barman/landlord and girl serving (sorry we didn't catch names!), especially from pub dog Molly.
Good to see a freehouse still, with a couple of good hand pump ales on (I had the Lamb bitter) along with a decent selection of gas taps. Decor and feel manages to balance the seemingly popular 'shabby chic'/pseudo-old world country style with mixed/interesting used furniture, and proper (for me!) 'classic pub' feel. I'm not a big fan of pubs going too gastro/faux-country to cater for more town/city and new(ish) country types, but then I was brought up on 'proper' rural/middle of nowhere pubs with mud on the floors, no heating and gents loos at least 3 fields away, so the Lamb does well to move with the times and still keep me happy....😉
Food delicious and reasonable prices despite current difficult financial times for pubs (I'm always willing to spend more though as otherwise how are we going to have pubs in the future? It's a tough business and people, including bar and waiting staff, have to make a living). Sat in the super dog friendly multi-level garden, and some folks just there for a couple of drinks, so good to see a mix of drinkers and eaters welcome. I had the 'cracked pork' burger which was super tasty - pork was sort of crispy peking duck style, my partner a generous Caesar salad with excellent anchovies.
All in, a cracking independent old pub in a beautiful village, giving a warm and friendly welcome to passing trade as much as locals, catering for walkers and dogs in an attractively set up pub serving proper beer and really good food.
If anything could be improved, a couple of lighter, simple items like a traditional Ploughman's or a couple of Sandwiches on the lunch menu I'm sure would go down a storm, especially for walkers/cyclists, but all in great stuff - long may they...
Read moreI wanted to take my gorgeous two daughters out for lunch. To eat outside but undercover was ideal. I booked a table for 1400. On arrival the carpark was full and I parked on the road just outside the pub. Walked to the outside entrance just at the side of the car park, after a short wait we were collected and escorted to our table. Very comfortable and very chic. There were steps leading upto a further grassed garden terrace. We were attended to for drinks and left with a menu. After 30 mins and a apology from the staff member our food order was taken. We all had roast dinner. A very short wait and we were delivered the most beautiful, hand cooked, freshly prepared Sunday roast I have ever tasted. The roast potatoes were crispy on the outside but light and fluffy inside. Each of us had a huge plate size Yorkshire pudding. The meat portion was superbly generous with a divine rich meat gravy. Many different roast vegetables supported the meat tower and a hot dish of Cauliflower cheese complemented the plate. Left in peace to enjoy our meal and conversation made the whole Sunday lunch experience very relaxing. The staff are friendly, attentive and very polite. This hidden gem is worthy of a visit for lunch, dinner or just a bar snack. It is a truly 5 star experience and we will be back to enjoy the food, drink and ambience very soon. If your reading the views thinking "shall we book?" Do it ... this gem will not disappoint no matter what your food...
