Popped in on a whim on Sunday of bank holiday weekend as up road from go outdoors. Ordered 2 beef dinners which was about £17 each. Food arrived and was very disappointed. one tiny peice of broccoli and very very small bit of cabbage all of which might just about fill a spoon. 3 potatoes 2 of which I wouldn't even count as so small. A carrot and what looked like an amazing Yorkshire pudding. Unfortunately looks can be deceiving as it must have been left in oven to keep warm and had gone so hard and brittle the whole thing literally disintegrated when you tried to cut into it. It was literally unedable. There was 2 good peices of beef and the gentleman who served us was very friendly so I gave 2 stars. I do not think this was anywhere near quality food or good value.I left out of pocket and hungry. We didn't get asked if anything was OK with meal to raise this issue and it was busy at bar so I wasn't confident to complain as it would have effected my anxiety.

The Mare and Colt and the Running Horse seem to have stopped serving food, part of the Chief and Brewer chain. Correct me if I'm wrong update as of 31st October 2024 In the past I have had some poor experiences at the Mare and Colt so I'm not a regular customer for those reasons, this will remain the same. The staff are Lovely and helpful, unfortunately the price structure for food and drink has been set very high in my opinion. Especially in comparison to other local Pubs. I'd class this Pub as a treat rather than a regular visit. A Chief and Brewer pricing issue which is out of the control of the staff. The tiny apple tart was £6.69 at the time of our visit, extrapolated from that. The cost of living crisis affects us all and in the choices we make, so no more Chef & Brewer visits for me.

It’s Greens King pub/restaurant with very high standards. The food was very good, it could do with a little fill-up on the plate, A standard salad or a few more chips, perhaps a bit of coleslaw. Don't get me wrong it was a good portion. Just the plates are big and as you look down on it, it just feels a little empty. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 I had burger chips and onion rings. The meal was very tasty and filled me right up. No problems with the quality of the food or cooking.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Other than that beer was excellent.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Food was well above the standard of a pub meal. Staff were really helpful, polite, attentive and quick with orders. All in all it prompted a return visit later in the week. In the area drop in and enjoy. Highly recommend.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

We arrived around 16:40 and our drinks and meal orders were taken. Many items weren't available and the server said that we "had come at the worst time". Not too much of a problem and we ordered other items from the menu. 45 Minutes later the server came to apologise and let us know that there was a problem with the ordering system and our order hadn't gone through. By this time one of the items ordered was no longer available. The food then arrived 1hr10 after ordering. We received possibly the worst food I've ever been served in a restaurant. Of the 9 meals there was only one that was remotely edible. The majority had clearly been sat under a heat lamp for an extended period of time as most of it was now cold and hard. The Turkey on the Sunday dinner was dry and crunchy. Sent this back and received the same plate that had evidently just been microwaved. The others we received were equally dry, cold or overcooked. The roast sirloin was like chewing gum and so dry that no amount of gravy was going to save it. The Lamb Shank shepherds pie was so overcooked that the lamb shank was a dry, congealed lump on top, the minced lamb in the bottom had formed into a burnt sticky clump which came out the same shape as the dish with the mash so dry on top that it had formed a complete skin over it of dry potato. The kids meals were either overcooked or cold. The kids pizza was the only think that wasn't dry, that was a barely cooked, clearly microwaved pizza with cold broccoli. All of the Yorkshire puddings were so dry that they crumbled to dust. The carrots were well cooked though. The only meal that was remotely edible was the duo of chicken. This crispy chicken was nice (as was anything deep fried like the chips) but the chicken breast was also overcooked and dry. Based on the food, there was no way that the food hadn't been sat around for ages and I suspect that it was just forgotten on the pass. As soon as you looked at the plates of food, it was clear that there were major issues with it yet it was still sent out. The chefs should be utterly ashamed that that "food" left their kitchen. We had our drinks order taken when we sat then didn't see another member of staff other than when the initial error was brought to our attention after 45 mins and when the food finally arrived. There was no proactive resolution of the problems to our meals other than the offer of free desserts which was declined. After complaining to the manager she removed the majority of the food from the bill which was appreciated. This was possibly the worst experience I have ever had in any restaurant from fine dining to Wetherspoons. In the end we were all so hungry that we resorted to a take away when we got home, having wasted 2 hours for one drink each. On reading the menu we arrived in high hopes for a lovely meal and left, vowing...

Myself and my partner had a meal here tonight for the first and last time. The waitress was very friendly as we arrived but barely gave us a minute to look at the drinks menu before coming to take the drinks order, I had literally just picked it up and felt so rushed I just said diet coke as it was all I could think of that quickly. When it came to the food we both had starters, I chose the mussels and my partner had pheasant strips..the strips were burnt to a crisp, dry and chewy, we mentioned it to a male member of staff (looked like the manager) whos response was "I've never had it come like that but it is a game bird" and walked off! My mussels were lovely apart from finding a piece of plastic in them! when the waitress came to clear the plates I informed her and she said" sorry about that,I'll let the chef know, hopefully round two will be better" I was a bit taken aback at the fact she was so blase` however we said nothing and waited for our mains..both chose seabass with risotto. There was no salt on the table and the male staff member looked at us gone out and just said "it runs out quick I'll fill it up" I asked for a wedge of lemon for the seabass and was bought 3 tiny slices, not really good for squeezing over fish .We had a check back where the waitress asked "is that course better for you?happy with this one?" Not really the right attitude after the bad starters and it felt a bit sarcastic. Although the food was hot it was very bland and not worth the price at all, however we ate it with no further complaints. After the two courses we had been put off and didn't really want a dessert to just be disappointed, we asked for the bill and the waitress miserably said "no dessert then" when she bought the bill she did deduct the starters but was very matter of fact and again like she couldn't be bothered and offered no further apology for the fact we had a bad meal or that my food was contaminated with plastic.. The food could've been really nice and we appreciate that things happen but how staff deal with it makes all the difference, we felt that the attitude of the staff was terrible, they really couldn't be bothered to acknowledge any of our issues and I felt like I was in the wrong for mentioning the fact I had plastic In my food, customer service was just awful. Will. Not return...

A very disappointing Christmas meal with friends, probably the worst Christmas meal I have ever had. We visit this restaurant regularly and have always been very happy with the food and service but this Christmas meal was a real let down. The restaurant was very busy and we soon became very cold once sat at the table. There was a log fire but there was an icy draughty coming through a vent. We kept the fire going ourselves by regularly putting logs on but it was still cold and we needed to wear our coats at the table. We also noticed other people complaining they were cold and having to put their coats on. The couple by us that were sat under the vent asked to be moved because of the icy draught and there was no heating at all in the toilets. The starter of cheese fondu was ok, although I wouldn’t really have classed radishes as suitable crudities I would have thought carrots would have been a better choice along with the cucumber. The turkey meal was pretty dire. There was plenty of turkey but the sprouts had been frozen and were hard and the “goose fat roast potatoes” had never seen any goose fat, they were frozen roast potatoes and were very dry and tasteless. There was not enough gravy so we had to ask for extra. The baked cheesecake was warm on the outside and frozen in the middle. For a Christmas meal I would also have expected crackers or festive serviettes but there was nothing. There were barely any Christmas decorations. The service was extremely slow, we were kept waiting between courses for far too long. When we asked for the bill they didn’t even know that we had paid a deposit! I would be reluctant to pay another visit, especially in the winter. Who wants to leave a warm house to sit and have a meal in a freezing cold restaurant? They might have spent a lot of money on revamping the interior but that doesn’t mean anything if the food is poor and the...
