Was really looking forward to trying this restaurant, but sadly, it's a "one and done" for us. At least at this particular location. There's not really a sign outside, so it's not easy to spot...until you realize their sign is a beat up old yellow school bus, and a couple of very ratted flags flying about that are so weather worn that you can't really read what they say, giving the impression that the business might be closed. I was willing to look past that and not judge by that alone. When we pulled in the parking lot, things looked a bit better. They have a liquor store and a nice little market there, but that's not what this review is about. We walked into the restaurant area and found a hostess stand and waited for the lady to help us. We opted to eat outside - which was nice. Tables are spaced evenly so you don't feel like you're sitting on top of each other. They have background music playing at just the right volume.
The menu is interesting, but not too many choices if you don't eat seafood. The good thing is that you can order a burger and have it blackened! The burger was ok, but the only cheese choice you have is cheddar. And the burger was as tough as shoe leather. (I wasn't offered to make a choice of medium, medium well, etc...) The fries were hot and very good, but still no ranch (see issue below) and they have food service brand ketchup...no thanks!
The server...well, she started out friendly and great, was able to answer the many questions we had, and then we placed our order. She brought us our food when it was ready, but forgot the side of ranch. She told us she'd be right back with more drinks and the ranch. We didn't see her again until I went looking for to go containers and our bill. If the restaurant was busy, I would have understood, but there were only 2 other tables outside and nobody was inside. The server who was taking care of those tables was doing an excellent job...I didn't feel we should ask her to find our server...
All in all, it may have been an off day for the server, and I could maybe overlook that if the food stood out, but it didn't. So with all the other fantastic food choices in the area, this is a one chance only situation and it's not worth...
Read moreWow. We were loyal to Sassy Bass during the Pandemic of 2020. Ate there just about every meal during our summer vacation. Food and service were great. Fast forward to March 2022, went there for dinner, it was packed and there was no hostess, so we left and decided to try again for lunch. Walked in to a much less crowded Sassy Bass with a party of 6. We were told to hold on before anyone asked how many was in our party. They immediately had a conversation among wait staff and we stood there for a few minutes longer. The manager assumed we were with a party of 10. However, when we told him we only had 6, he seemed shocked and sat us at a table for 8. The waitress, Nova, came over and told us we were seated in the wrong place because this was not where we were supposed to be sitting. I let her know we were not part of the group of 10 and she felt the need to tell me she made someone move because of us and rolled her eyes. As a customer, it is not my problem if the staff cannot communicate well enough to adequately manage their dining room. The manager told us Nova would be backto take our order. She informed us there were no raw oysters and that it would be after 3. We all ordered something different because we came there for raw oysters. However, 5 minutes after we placed our orders, raw oysters showed up and she asked how many we would like to add to our order. Seemed like an upscale tactic. I stuck with my $10.99 shrimp although I was prepared to eat about $100 worth of raw oysters. Navy Cove oysters are the best and totally worth the roughly $30/dozen. However, due to the poor attitude of our server , Nova, I decided I could find oysters somewhere else during my stay. Southern hospitality went a long way during the Pandemic when everyone was catering to the restaurant industry. However, I no longer can feel sorry for those choosing to work in this industry when they can't even fake a smile or show common courtesy to paying repeat customers. Do better,Sassy Bass, especially since you have your hands in multiple businesses on...
Read moreThis place was highly rated by Google and came up on my Google feed several months ago and I've been wanting to try it ever since. We finally got to the area and decided to try it for their Navy Cove Oysters. We drove 20 miles to the location, we arrived and were told to sit anywhere we'd like, as the waitress was working by herself. She had a great attitude and was as helpful as she could be under the circumstances. By the time other help arrived 30 minutes later, we were able to place our order. We ordered the raw oysters and were told they were out of them (due to a storm and they couldn't get them from Navy Cove-so, not their fault). We were bummed but it wasn't a deal breaker so I decided that since I was at the "Sassy Bass" I would try their sea bass---- they were out of it. So I opted for the fish tacos. We ordered the jalapeno hush puppies, and the crab crostini as appetizers. My husband ordered the red snapper. The crab crostini was mostly bread with a bit of semi-dry crab on top, nothing to write home about. The jalapeno hush puppies were good (not worh the drive for them alone though). My fish tacos were underwhelming at best so I just didn't bother wasting the calories by eating them. I tried my husband's red snapper, it tasted better than the fish in my tacos, but it was nothing extraordinary either. My husband referred to it as the worst red snapper he's ever had, his mashed potatoes were dry, but the creamed corn was good. I'm disappointed that we drove so far to slap $100 down plus a tip for such a disappointing experience. Maybe they were just having a bad day but I will not go back...
