First of all this shop is beautiful and had several pieces that we are very interested in and we picked up some great little treasures while we were there. Really this review is about "Birdie" Birdie, like everyone we met in Alaska, was an absolutely precious person. When we walked in I heard Christian music playing but before I heard that music, the words "oh wow" came out of my mouth. Most would think those words were the result of the beautiful artwork and local crafts that you immediately see when you walk in. Others might think it was because the smell of the cafe and that chowder we will have to have sometime. But really it was one of those breath taking spiritual moments even more so than seeing that blue iceberg floating out in portage lake. I didn't know what it was and then when I heard the Christian music I realized that was the reason for such a great "vibe", but no it was the lady behind the counter. She warmly greeted us as most Alaskans do but she had such an amazing sweet presence. My wife and I were talking to her when I felt this incredible need to WALK AWAY. My wife and I are together all the time. And "walking sway" from a conversation never happens. I just walked over to the cruise counter and started talking to the lady there who gave me some great local area info. While I was talking, my wife and Birdie were in a very deep and emotional conversation that I could tell was wonderful. I don't really know all of what was said but I do know that whatever Birdie said made my already wonderful loving and appreciative wife grab me and hold me tighter than she ever has before. When we got in the van to head to Whittier, my wife asked me if I wanted to know what all was discussed, I just smiled and said "you can tell me later".I think I'll let her share the story with me the day we buy land in Alaska. Thanks Birdie for making the most "in love" woman I've ever known, even more so with uluru words.

Read moreThe Portage Glacier Cafe is the only restaurant you'll find in the Portage Valley. Nothing like a hot meal after hours of cold wind. You'll find hot pies, hot dogs, and other hot items. You'll also find cold items like cold drinks and sandwiches. There is plenty of seating and you'll have company with animals surrounding you. The restrooms may be out of order, but you'll find restrooms outside towards the Begich Boggs Visitor Center.

Read moreWould give 7 stars if they would let me. In a time where there is an enormous staff shortage, it goes unnoticed here. The food is exquisite, we had the rib-eye sandwich and bread pudding, and they were the best ever. Their brews are truly excellent.
Tried their highly popular key lime pie beer, has a very creamy end note, (which was not especially to my liking,) however, the beer was quite good! Their raspberry wheat ale was superb, and their whiskey flights are an...
