My husband and I visited McCarthy for the first time and due to the small size of the town and its geographic location, we expected poor food and restaurant options (we're from Los Angeles so our standards for restaurants are pretty high). However, we were shocked by the menu and food quality! We ordered the salmon and Chugach cheesesteak with a miso salad and hand-cut curly fries. Everything was delicious. My husband doesn't like salads very much and he usually dislikes any miso or Asian-flavored salads, but he ate more than half of mine because it was so good! Everything was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. There was also a great beer and wine list to pair.
When traveling we try not to go back to the same restaurant twice so we can try a variety of places, but we had to make an exception for this one and ended up back here for breakfast! Again, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and flavor of the food. We ordered the hummus wrap (I saved half for lunch) and the potatohead burrito, both were very delicious. The coffee and tea were also excellent (and I am a self-proclaimed tea snob).
On top of the great tasting food, we enjoyed the surrounding natural environment and chill vibe. The service was...
Read moreThis has been a local treasure for many years. It started in a trailer and now is a full on restaurant and pub. The great thing about the transition is that it has not lost its funky flavor.
We went as a large group so I got to try most of the small menu. Of course start with a basket of the addictive fries. We had plain and rosemary garlic. Both delicious.
The Potato is deep inside the beautiful and rugged Wrangell mountains and hanging out in the area will make you hungry. The portions served will not disappoint. I had the special, chicken enchiladas. 2 Well seasoned large chunks of chicken in a not too spicy sauce, sour cream and guac on the side.
Their Potatohead burrito was ordered by many at the table and it is perfect after a long day of scrabbeling over mountains. This monster has fries, eggs, salsa, peppers and if you want add some pulled pork. It will satisfy.
Other items included fish and chips, bangers and mash and of course in a youthful place like McCarthy Alaska, tacos.
The selection of beers is very good with some draft available. I really liked the many cider choices.
Prices are reasonable for this deep in the back country and they accept...

We stayed out in Wrangell-St. Elias for 4 days and pretty much everyday, we went to the Potato. In the process we met probably one of the most friendly waitresses you’ll ever meet. She was so accommodating, made lots of conversation, and was very attentive to everyone.
The vibe is very nice, the outdoor patio is very spacious, and they have a bunch of friendly dogs around too! The environment overall is very entertaining and accommodating.
As for food, everything was fantastic! Their fries however were probably my favorite thing to get there. Fried to perfection. And seasoned super well! I didn’t get very many photos since we were busy having fun with our waitress. Sorry lol.
So overall, this has to be the best place to go if you have success in the journey out...
