Big J's Homestyle Kitchen — Restaurant in Alexandria

Food was a mixture of good and bad leaning more to the side of bad. Service is not well executed at all. Overall would not recommend people eat here based off my experience.

Food:

Red beans and rice: the red beans and rice were actually decent. They did not have a lot of sausage in them but that was fine as the flavor of the dish itself outweighed the lack of meat. Would absolutely recommend. 5/5

Catfish: Catfish was good, although the size of the fillers were a little small, which is the only reason it didn't get a perfect score. 4/5

Shrimp: This is where is got bad. The shrimp was rubbery, was not purged and was not de-veined. It looks nothing like the other photos of the shrimp that we had seen. 1/5

Shrimp Puffs: There were a couple of shrimp puffs that were just Puffs. No shrimp ever made it inside them. 1/5

Shrimp and corn soup: This tasted horrible. Tasted like it came straight from a can and was just mixed up and heated. 1/5

Service:

Friendliness: Staff were friendly enough. 3/5

Attentiveness: waitress was very inattentive even though the place was so small. I think it was her first job so giving the benefit of the doubt. 1/5

Cleanliness: We were sat at a dirty table. Enough said. 1/5

Easily the worst food I have ever eaten period. Im unsure what everyone else has been getting quality wise but 17 dollars for 4 ounces of instant mash potatoes, 5 ounces of white overcooked rice, a burnt unseasoned frozen hamburger patty and a small portion(maybe 4 ounces ) of instant out of the bag brown gravy. Mind you none of this had any flavor at all. Im not one to complain about restraunt foods especially if it's my first time because I'm a manager at one myself and understand everything that goes into this type of business. As I said maybe I have gone at a bad time or something but this was absolute terrible and frankly is just wrong to serve your guests. This is a place we stumbled upon by accident driving home from an appointment in Alexandria. We had to make a return trip 2 days later and made this restaurant a stop for the return trip home. Definitely worth it. VERY CLEAN!!! Friendly workers and the food is on point. So glad we went and we will be going back.
