We have to go out of our way to get to Alfred Country Store, but we do it all the time. The main reason is the menu, which has a lot of variety and is very modern. You can still get a Steak Bomb or Italian Sub if you want, or you can get something lighter like a Cabo Wrap. I think their pizza is the best around. It's a different style than other places in the area. Even if it isn't your favorite style, I bet you'll find it pretty good. The baked goods are otherworldly.
There are a couple of negative reviews that just don't seem fair to me. I'm not affiliated with the store in any way (other than being a fairly regular customer). I don't know the owner. One seems to have shown an out-of-state drivers license and the clerk couldn't find the DOB on it. The clerk didn't handle the situation perfectly and the reviewer attributed it to racism. Another was upset with curt conversation while ordering. If they were busy, the person answering the phone is likely also on the register.
The store itself is very nice as well. It seems to have everything you'd need if you were upta camp. It feels a lot more organized and less cluttered than other stores in the area. They also have a fine selection of souvenir type items for the summer people. The staff has always been super. They really seem to care about the customers and their jobs.

Ā Ā Ā Read moreI grew up in Alfred, left for the military, and was excited to return 11 years later because I missed the friendliness of the people of Maine. I used to go to Alfred Country Store growing up. My brother and I would walk over for candy and sometimes on Fridays my family would get pizza or subs from there. Needless to say, I was excited to order pizza with my family from here for the first time since moving back this past Friday. However, when I called to place the order, the person on the phone gave me an attitude when I asked if I could order some pizzas, she was rude the entire conversation, and didn't even say goodbye before hanging up the phone. I was so disappointed after hanging up the phone, someone suggested I just don't pick the order up. But because I am nice and from Maine, I called back to cancel my order (not even 2 minutes after placing the order). Met with attitude again and "she already started making it," I told her I won't be picking it up because of her attitude. She said something like, "fine" and hung up. Never again. I don't know what happened but for a small town store in Maine, customers should be treated with more...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis part of Maine has stores and gas stations that all serve food and before Nouria ruined it, each was unique. You went to that one place for the good pizza, and the other for the good ice cream. Such were vacations of my childhood, as it was for many I expect. This place has food that is as good as can be found in these beautiful arcane little New England stores. There are a dozen within 5 miles, at least, and all serve decent chow. If youre on the lakes in western York county within...20 miles of here, it offers....an artisinal take on the ubiquitous deliciousness found throughout the region in the American classics: Pizza, sandwiches, soups, salads, and sundries. Also, they sell candied bacon like beef jerky and maple cheese popcorn and that's how a 15 dollar lunch gets over 30 dollars but thats on me, prices are competitive. lol. Well worth it....
