2023 October Review - 5 stars Revisited and a lot had changed for the better but still room for improvement so let's get that out of the way.
Still lacking luxardo/candied cherries for bourbon cocktails. The Restaurant Store carries generic brand cheap so no excuses. They are required.
The men's restroom off of the bar looks clean but the smell of ammonia/urine takes your breath away. It needs a deep cleaning.
Onto the good!
Started with an old fashioned. Not too sweet, but weak overall and missing key ingredient above. I judge bars on classic cocktails not trendy or special menus. They should be made perfectly and consistently.
App: Crispy brussel sprouts. While not crispy they were excellent just the same. Paired the Lancaster Milk Stout which was great.
Salad: Spring mix with house sweet and sour dressing, fresh rolls. Both excellent.
Intermission: Enough time was given to finish the salad, have some water, review the wine list, enjoy the atmosphere, and have a conversation. This is the art of dining. Get fast food elsewhere. Nothing ruins a meal worse than entrees arriving with a cluttered table or worse, mid salad. Well done on perfect pacing Yellow House.
Entrees: Osso Buco over risotto and Pumpkin Ravioli. Perfectly sized entrees. Handmade pasta and perfectly cooked risotto. Osso Buco sauce was rich and cared for. I usually appreciate less salt in my meals but found myself adding salt to get full flavor. Paired with Row Eleven Russian River Valley Pinot Noir which was hands down one of finest Pinots I've ever had.
Finished with Pumpkin Martini, which was nice and apropos for the season.
Service was excellent and attentive. We'll put this back into regular rotation.
2019 Review - 3 Stars Went out looking for something a little upscale and left disappointed. The service and setting are both excellent, though the playlist could use a little attention. The bar doesn't have candied cherries for classic cocktails like a Manhattan, but it's well stocked otherwise with a decent wine list. We ordered clams casino and baked brie as apps. The clams were not fresh tasting and dirty with sediment. The brie was fine though, nothing special. For mains, my wife ordered veal scaloppini, which was tough and required a knife to cut, which is a fail for that dish. I ordered the special fish, Applejack, which I hadn't had before. I still can't find it on the internet, but it was strong in flavor, like pike or mackerel, but a large portion. The purees were good and necessary to tame the fish. I wouldn't order it again, but I didn't dislike it either. Overall, a nice place, prices in line for the quality and quantity, but were slightly...
Read moreHaving dinner in this restaurant is like going back in time. It was literally like stepping through the door of a time machine. Frozen in the 1800’s, this beautifully upkept, daisy yellow farmhouse welcomes you as a friend into a foyer of, what feels like, a museum. My fiancé and I decided to have dinner here just to experience and appreciate the historical relevance of this local icon. Throughout the evening, I was tantalized by the thought of 19th century spirits because the decor of this place is some seriously spooky stuff! The chandeliers, the candles, the dark gloomy dining rooms; they all created an atmosphere of ghostly lounging. Speaking of ghosts, our waiter was my highest critique of this establishment. While opening our wine, he not only spilled it all over the table, but also my fiancé found pieces of cork in his glass. So this was my biggest problem and probably the reason we won’t come back. However, the food was pretty good. Nothing too wrong with it, except the oysters were salty and not shucked properly. The ribs, sweet potato fries, duck, and snapper soup were all pretty okay though. The creme brûlée was great and their homemade chocolate ice cream was creamy. So overall, the dessert was better than the actual food. I had a lovely date with my fiancé here. We like haunted, spooky things so this place was pretty tight for that kind of experience. But for fine dining, or even average, modern dining, this restaurant does not live up. With all due respect for its long standing history, The Yellow House restaurant is a ghost, still clutching dearly to the old days of warm, farmhouse fare. Worth at least one open minded visit, this is a local historical site that any proud member of the surrounding areas of Oley, Boyertown, Douglassville, Amityville, and Gilbertsville should...
Read moreI've been wanting to go to Yellow House for YEARS. I was so excited to finally go tonight, while my brother & sister-in-law were in town for the holidays. Our server, Tom, ruined the experience the second I mentioned my 8 year old's food allergies. I asked him to "let the kitchen know that my son has food allergies to peanuts, peas, & chickpeas." Tom responded with, "that's not going to happen." I responded with "excuse me?" To make sure I heard him correctly. He then repeated, "that's not going to happen. That stuff is all over the kitchen. We cook in peanut oil." I then turned to my husband and told him that nothing here was safe for our son to eat. Tom then started to back peddle. He told me they didn't have peas or chickpeas in the restaurant and that they cook using vegetable oil. Feeling stuck, because we were there with my husband's side of the family, & I couldn't leave with my son we stuck it out.... But the service did not improve. From the time we sat down to the time we received our appetizers it had been an hour. Then three people in our party had ordered soups, but they never came out. Lastly, my sister-in-law ordered a medium rare steak that came out well done.
In conclusion, the restaurant is beautiful and charming (including the bathroom). Everything I ordered was delicious (pomegranate martini, festive flatbread, & duck breast), but I was really unhappy with our servers attitude toward...
