I took my son to Archer City for a little father and son get out of the city R&R. After two hours of beautiful rolling green pastures, we arrived at a one light town with a square and courthouse just south of Wichita Falls. We stayed at The Spur Hotel which is a historic western but fixed up hotel that had rooms for a hundred bucks. But had everything we needed. We inquired about a gun range at the nearby town lake and were introduced to its caretaker Billy Burks. We offered to buy him lunch for meeting us and taking us to the range, where they have skeet, pistol and rifle options. But the most helpful advice he gave us was that when eating at Murn’s Cafe always order the Coconut Pie first because Murn only makes eleven pies and when they run out (and they do, quick!) that’s it and you have missed some of the best pie around! Archer City is known for having a theater that was in the movie The Last Picture Show and home to the Author of Lonesome Dove based loosely on real cowboys Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight. If watching the street light turn from green to red is not your thing for night life or watching for tornadoes on a lightning lit night, then Wichita Falls is just up the road 20 minutes and has several neat restaurants, bars, outdoor music and coffee shops near the train tracks downtown. But there is something to be said about sitting on the stoop sipping a Dr. Pepper with your boy and waving at the town folk drive by. They might even stop and tell you a story or two…

As soon as you step inside, Murn's is what you'd expect from a central small-town diner. Red vinyl booths, kitschy seasonal dressing, familiar staff with familiar regulars, and generous servings of food. In a town of just over 1,800, it's one of four dining options for someone just passing through; the others being Lucky's, Dairy Queen, and the Spur Hotel kitchen. Murn's is very much a local staple, authentic as can be. Not a whit of conniving or concern for destination dining, and yet a destination it surely is. Had the "Cowboy Breakfast" -- a perfect chicken fried steak.

A very nice local restaurant in Archer City,TX. My motorcycle riding group of 11 bikes decided to ride here from DFW for lunch. We arrived at 11 am and had no problem being seated. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. Menu had a good selection of items. I chose the Chick Fried steak, which was good, but also came with fries instead of mash potatoes, and they arrived cold and limp. Otherwise, I still would recommend this place.

The food is wonderful! Wonderful atmosphere, very family and friend oriented. The only down falls of Murn’s has to be the hours of operation and the wait times for food some days. I wish that Murn’s had dinner hours more than just Friday nights when they have catfish (which is AMAZING) and some days when you go in and order off the menu instead of the special it takes exceptionally longer than it should. That being said, I’m going to brag on the staff now. All of the staff from the waiters and waitresses to the kitchen staff and owners; they are all FANTASTIC. I love going in there knowing that I’m going to see friendly faces and people and friends I’ve known for years. Murn’s is practically a staple here in Archer City. Even if they have never been to archer, I’ve had people ask about “the little cafe” and I always brag! Love my little home town and the people...

Great food! From burgers to chicken fry to catfish Fridays and especially the Wednesday special, I have always enjoyed my meals! The burgers are big and juicy with crisp toppings and hand cut fries, while the chicken fried steaks ate tender. The onion rings are always a hit with soft thin onion not dried out or a huge mouthful and a perfect crispy batter crust! They are famous for their friday catfish! I like chunky tenders with a crunchy cornmeal batter and my mom like thin and crisp...they can please us both! My favorite is the Wednesday surprise special! It's chefs choice, sometimes it's chicken spaghetti, or tacos, enchiladas or a seasonal delight. You never know till they post that day. But I know whatever it is it...
