Aspen Mountain Ski Resort Sundeck — Restaurant in Aspen

A must visit while in Aspen. Located atop Aspen Mountain, the Gondola ride is about 20 minutes to get there. The views are breathtaking! There are easy hiking opportunities during the summer, and guided snowshoeing trips winter time at the top. During the summer you have to purchase a Gondola ticket or a sightseeing pass (a sightseeing pass is offered during the winter too for non-skiers). The sightseeing pass is a much better deal, because $10 credit at the Sundeck or Ajax Tavern is included in the price. The pass includes other discounts - bike rentals, Limelight Lounge, etc. The Sundeck is a large and casual self serve restaurant. The food is pizza and burgers, but they have some healthy options such as salads and a protein bowl for vegetarians. They also have a full bar. Get your food and drinks and sit outside on the deck or anywhere where you can enjoy the magnificent scenery. There are activities for kids - my children love riding the Gondola! I had a terrible experience with a cashier at the sundeck restaurant. The customer ahead of me needed help checking out. So this customer decided to get out of line and wait for the cashier's help. There was another checkout ahead of me that was empty. This cashier could have simply taken in the customer on the empty checkout and helped. Instead, this cashier decided to reprimand me for cutting the line and checking myself out in a self checkout. At this point, I had already tapped my card. This cashier decided to check me out without a receipt, she didn't even ask if I needed one. She could have left me to tend to myself and be helping this customer ahead of me who has been waiting forever at this point. This cashier was very inefficient leading to a long line and was super rude too. Hope she is aware that most people know how to use self checkout machines and that they will ask for help if they need. She doesn't need to make decisions for customers. Great views on top of Ajax's Silver Queen Gondola! Food is served cafeteria-style. There's a staffed salad section and grill section. Baked potato station and soup station are self-serve. Food may be a bit expensive but it's delicious!

If you're here in the summer, definitely get the "Perfect Summer Package" rather than the simple Gondola ride ticket. For $9 more, you get a $10 credit toward food at the Sundeck plus possible multiple uses of the lifts (the other lifts being the Elk Camp Gondola and Chairlift over at Snowmass).
