Quaint, small-town BBQ shack with authentic food and friendly staff. I visited on a Thursday for lunch. They are only open Thurs, Fri and Sat so plan accordingly. At noon the parking lot was almost full and most of the sit-down tables were taken. I got my food to go and sat outside in the shaded picnic table area. Their menu is pretty standard, I got the rib plate and a side of sausage, tea to drink. When I ordered it, the counter lady walked over to the pit and cleanly grabbed a whole slab, then brought it over and cut me four juicy, thick ribs fresh. For sides they have standard ones, mac and cheese, cole slaw, beans and potato salad. They also have smoked cabbage on special. I got the potato and cole slaw, which looked so good I got double cole slaw. The box of food was heavy, my total about $18, which I thought was reasonable.
Now, the real question, how did it taste? I'm a rib fan and these were juicy, hot and delicious. They had a lot of strong pork flavor, with a secondary smoke flavor. No rub or seasonings were present or needed. This was not a strong smokey BBQ type, where the mesquite is the dominant flavor. This was much more subtle and had good pork flavor. They were also done perfectly - not that 'fall off the bone' junk you get from Applebee's, boiled and mushy. These were a good balance of tender and firm. I didn't have to gnaw through the meat but it didn't just pull away. This is done properly, by the way.
The sides were good too. The potato salad was super creamy, almost like mashed potatoes with chunks. The cole slaw was great, didn't taste like it came from Sysco, with good crunch. My sausage was nice, hot and fully cooked, good snap to the casing. My plate also came with very standard bbq sauce that I didn't need and a few slices of white bread. I was pretty full after eating about half, so the rest will be tomorrow's lunch.
This is a good, mom and pop spot. It's not flashy, the people aren't wearing skinny jeans and the smoke is authentic. They obviously know their clientele to be only open three days a week and still make a healthy business. Skip Sonny's, skip Bubbaque's, skip corporate BBQ and drive a little further to find the real heart and soul of the smoke, the meat and the...
Read moreIf you're looking for some delicious barbecue in Auburndale, Peebles Barbecue is definitely worth checking out. The restaurant is small and unassuming, but the food is top-notch.
First off, the pulled pork is amazing. It's perfectly cooked and full of flavor, with just the right amount of smoke. The brisket is also fantastic - it's tender and juicy, with a nice smoky flavor. And the ribs are some of the best I've had - they're meaty and fall-off-the-bone tender.
The sides are also delicious, and one standout is the baked beans. They're sweet and savory, with chunks of tender meat adding a satisfying texture. And if you have room for dessert, be sure to try the banana pudding. It's a southern classic made with layers of creamy vanilla pudding, sliced bananas, and vanilla wafers. The pudding is perfectly sweet and creamy, with just the right amount of vanilla flavor. It's a must-try!
The service at Peebles Barbecue is also friendly and attentive. The staff is happy to answer any questions you have about the menu, and they'll make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your meal.
Overall, Peebles Barbecue is a must-visit if you're in the Auburndale area. The food is delicious, the prices are reasonable, and the service is great. Give it a try - you won't be...
Read moreIt pains me to write this review because I've been a fan for decades. But it must be said! The consistency of the food has gone downhill. The atmosphere and service are both still 10/10 awesome, though. But the quality of the food (specifically the chopped pork) is not something one can count on anymore.
I've been three times this year. The first time, the chopped pork was decent. It didn't have the classic flavor we've all learned to expect. It was filled with fat. The second time, the chopped pork was incredible as it used to always be 100% of the time. The third time (yesterday,) the chopped pork was a weird mixture of sliced pork and chopped. It was absolutely FILLED with fat. The large slices that were mixed in were tough to chew. It was tasteless without massive amounts of Peebles sauce.
It's sad to only see the splendor of the old days 33% of the time. I didn't mention the sides, but they were OK. Besides the mac and cheese (which should be scrubbed from the menu as it is ALWAYS tasteless), the potato salad and BBQ beans were good.
Please, owners of Peebles - try your chopped pork every hour and make sure it is what it should be. Yesterday couldn't even match the low...
