I drive by Bone Heads on my way to and from work and finally decided to take my wife their first dinner.
From the billboards on 94 and the signage outside the building, I expected a standard BBQ joint atmosphere. But when we came it, the atmosphere was a weird mix of the marketing theme and a mix between Cracker Barrel and a grandmas house. It wasn’t off putting, but it wasn’t the atmosphere either of us expected. I believe the owners have only had the place for a short while, so I’m assuming they haven’t had time to change things too much from the previous occupants.
As far as the food, it was a mixed bag. The fried pickles were great- battered, not breaded. The main meal - we both had the pulled pork sandwich - was just okay. Nothing was bad, but nothing was outstanding. Having BBQ in the name of your restaurant gives the impression that you’ve got the bbq thing down. But the pulled pork was fairly bland, served with a very small squirt of sauce, on a plain hamburger bun no different than what you’d get off the shelf at Kroger. Again, it wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t what I expected it to be. It would have been MUCH better if there had been a selection of different sauces available, but they only offer one standard bbq sauce.
The coleslaw (I prefer it on the side) was fairly bland as well.
Service was what you expect right now with worker shortages. It took longer to be waited on or to get drinks refilled, but that’s because our server was busting their behind taking care of lots of other people, so no complaints there.
Overall, it was an okay experience. The food and dining room lacked character, but I also came in with assumptions. We’ll certainly be back to give it another try and I hope my review doesn’t dissuade anyone else from going. (I also hope they add more bbq...
Read moreI've been coming here since about 15 years ago..back when it was the Pickle Barrel Inn. Boneheads is a unique place with lots of history. Check out the website. Of course, you have to order pickle chips! I've ordered different varieties of fried pickles from many different places all over, in different states. Nobody beats Boneheads 🙌. I've brought many people here over the years & everyone enjoys it. There's a bar & outdoor patio seating. Train tracks run along the back of the parking lot & can be loud, but not very often. Prime rib melt is to die for! Chicken fettuccine alfredo w/broccoli is amazing. Good BBQ. The prices are a little high, which is to be expected. The food is usually worth it. My only complaint is that every time I've visited during the past few months it has taken a ridiculous amount of time to be served our meals..almost an hour a few times (used to be out 20 minutes). I suppose if you order drinks & appetizers (fried pickle chips) it helps. Expect to spend at least $50 for a couple if you order 1 drink each, an appetizer, and 2 entrees. Desserts are awesome as well..big chocolate chip cookie served warm in a mini iron skillet w/vanilla ice cream 🤤 strawberry shortcake sundae served in a Mason...
Read moreI came out to dinner here with my husband and sister on Saturday night. The wait time for a table was only about 15 minutes. Service to get our food didn't take forever either, like some places do on the weekend. The food tasted fresh and home cooked, as you would expect from a BBQ joint! The meats and sides were seasoned well, the meat was all juicy, too! The ribs were fall off the bone good. I ordered the Bonehead BBQ combo for just under $30, so I could try a little of each meat that I wanted. They were very generous with their portion sizes as I was able to have four meals from this one combo dinner. Sometimes restaurants give you tons of food to cover for their crappy meals. This was NOT the case here! Their food was SO good! If you are in the mood for some good BBQ, try this place and you won't be disappointed! All of the staff were very welcoming and kind, too. We also came during the third weekend of October, which we all know it's spooky time! According to legend, the Willis restaurant is haunted! We didn't experience anything there but they did have a lot of cool decorations up for the season and even the employees were dressed up in costumes! We had a great experience, as first-timers and will be...
