Horizons — Restaurant in Bald Head Island

I feel the need to review this place since I had suspicions, but then they were false because it was actually good, and other websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor may not tell you to go there. Horizons is a great/good seafood restaurant located in the Bald Head Island Club. I love the golf carts, and good thing they had a parking space for them- which was meant to keep them from being too hot since it was covered by a roof. The elevator is very unique: you step in one one side, and you go out the other once you're there. Originally I thought it'd be like the sign on the front (that kind of restaurants judging from it), but it wasn't. It looked better than that. We sat outside with a party of 7, and our server was the myth, the (wo)man, the legend: Taylor. She was very nice and lightened the atmosphere for us. Whenever it was too sunny, she didn't mind the whole switching the entire seating of the table around kind of thing. She is very comical, too. Anyways, for appetizers, our table got the Crab Dip and a Pub Pretzel. I do not know what was in that crab dip (except crab), but HOLY SMOKES THAT WAS INCREDIBLE. It reminded me of some other dish, and I loved it. Pretzel was also good. For entrees, our table ordered 2 things of chicken tenders, buffalo wings, a caesar salad (maybe a different one), a Cape Fear burger, the shrimp or scallop risotto (i couldn't remember since I'm writing this the day after the meal), and the pan-seared Halibut. The food was good, but not amazing. For Bald Head standards, I'll give this a 5 star. For my regular standards, I'll give it a 4. Also, I believe the seagulls raided some table at the far back. Service was fine. Hostess very nice and able to work us in. Server seemed a bit overwhelmed but was good about getting drinks and orders in timely manner. Food (6 meals) came out quicker than expected- thank goodness with small kids.

The food was average. The combo basket’s best item was the shrimp. The oysters were small and slightly ‘off tasting’ (I know, I know we’re out of oyster season!) and fish portion pretty small. I would get JUST the shrimp basket in future. Fries were standard. Hush puppies hard act to follow after having the delicious jalapeño ones at Jailhouse. The tuna tacos had a good portion of the fried wonton chips but once the tuna gone I didn’t really want to eat the chips. The tuna was lacking some acid or salt- cannot put my finger on it. Again average meal but a bit overpriced for quality. I would return as a nice view and convenient but wouldn’t have high food flavor...

We asked if they were open about 5 days ago and they said yes. I asked if we needed reservations and they said no. Tonight I called to make sure they were open because the website said they were closed. The lady who answer said yes and I said see you soon. She said we look forward to it. We got there with a party of 5 and they asked if we had reservations. I told Baye (the supervisor on duty) the story and she said sorry you need a reservation. I told her I called not 16 minutes ago and she said she would talk to the girl who answered the phone. This is the second time we have had a problem and the last. We went to Jailhouse and are about to be served. We could have eaten at home but with the thought that local restaurants have struggled lately, we wanted to do the right thing and support them… looks like Horizons can do without...
