I do not understand the hype of this place and the mediocre tasting hot dogs that taste just like every other place I’ve gone to that’s supposed to be “the best hot dogs in WV”. Took my dad here for Father’s Day bc he loves his WV hot dogs and we’re always looking for a new spot to try. Hot as Hades outside on that day and pretty hot in the converted school buses used as dining area. Even though there were window AC unit it in. The seats were awful. But I didn’t except that part to be great. Long line winding to the outside. Finally made it to the counter, friendly counter person taking orders. Ordered 4 Wv hot dogs. Which includes the usual of chili and slaw, mustard and onion, 2 cans of drink, and the garlic ranch fries. Ok these fries were delicious! The best thing I tasted that day from there. The wiener itself in the hot dog was kinda tasteless like everywhere else. The chili was the same. Everyone seems to have the same recipe or order it premade from the same supplier around here. The slaw was pretty dry cabbage almost. I would not make that drive to this place for the hot dogs. But if I’m in the area I would definitely get the garlic ranch fries. That’s the only thing I could highly recommend here. For what I listed above is was $30 for us. See the menu for prices. The hunt will continue until I can find a real good WV hot dog or I’ll just have to continue to just make my own with more taste than these places...
Read moreHillbilly Hot Dogs is a West Virginia staple, even if you only stop to look at the decorations! If the name didn't set the scene enough, please don't come here looking for a fancy, 5-star meal. The vibe is casual, vintage, primitive, homemade, chill, random, and very fun. It's a cool spot to take pictures and relax.
Their menu has what you would expect - a variety of hot dogs with different types of toppings, plus hamburgers, sandwiches, a few salads, sides, and some desserts. Today, we called in an order for pick-up and got: 1 Egg Dog, 1 Mettswurst, 1 WV Dog, 1 Pine-Applalachian Dog, 1 Homewrecker (dressed as an Ala Cheesy Beefy Weenie), 1 order of Mac Wedges, and 1 order of Garlic Bluegrass Cheese Fries.
We saved the Homewrecker for later, but had the rest as a late lunch. All of the hot dogs had good flavor. They're standard-sized dogs, nothing too massive. Good toppings. The garlic fries were AMAZING and the mac wedges great. Even after the drive from Lesage to Charleston, our order was still hot and fresh. I think everyone should stop here at least once...
Read moreHillbilly Hot Dogs has been a favorite of mine for years. The atmosphere is always eye catching and amusing seeing every little thing tucked away in every corner of the property. You could spend an hour or more just looking through the things squirrelled away. Atmosphere will only get you so far though, because if the food isn't good, all the cool little things won't keep you coming back. Fortunately, the food is the best part of the experience.
Whether you want a plain hot dog with standard toppings or you want to try one of their great unique offerings, you're sure to find something you like. If you're up for a challenge (or you just want some food to last a couple days) the Homewrecker is a must-try. It's enormous, and I'd recommend getting one with the toppings from one of their standard sized hot dogs. The burgers and sides are also excellent if that's more of what you're in the mood for.
Definitely give Hillbilly Hot Dogs a try, they're an area favorite for...
