Went to Batesville from North Arkansas for the day. Decided to go to Fred's because there was a restaurant with the same name where we lived and we wanted to compare. Big surprise...no relation. Anyway, my date ordered the "Big 'Un" (six pieces of catfish) with "all the trimmins" (brown beans, Cole slaw, green tomato relish, and hush puppies) I ordered the seafood platter (four pieces of fried catfish, three shrimp...I chose grilled)and a baked potato. The beans, Cole slaw, relish, and 3 hush puppies (she said they were making more) were brought to our table in separate individual bowls. The beans were bland and barely warm. The Cole slaw was good, but there was not much of it. The relish was unexpectedly sweet, so I didn't care for it. About 10 minutes later, our dinner plates were brought out, with steam coming off the meal. I unwrapped my baked potato to put (fake) butter and a packet of sour cream on it, and the butter didn't even melt. The potato tasted like it had been cooked many hours prior, and kept warm in a pan of water. Unimpressed, I put a fork full of fish dipped in tartar sauce in my mouth, and had to immediately grab my ice water, because it was so hot I couldn't even chew it! After the burn faded, I noticed a distinct muddy taste to the catfish. I switched to my shrimp (tail on), hidden under my catfish. It was highly seasoned and somewhat slimy, and lukewarm. I was so disappointed, I ate my potato, shrimp, and what was left of the first piece of fish. I left the other three pieces uneaten (we took them home to our German shepherd, and she didn't like them, either!). My date said his fish tasted wet (soggy), but his french fries were tasty. About halfway through our meal, our server brought another basket of nearly burnt hush puppies, which were not even good enough to take home! Our meal for two (only one drink, iced tea) was over $30, and i left hungry. We were both very disappointed, and will not return the next time we visit Batesville. The sign claims they have the "best catfish and hush puppies in Arkansas". I...
Read moreIf you're in the mood for a hearty and satisfying meal, look no further than Fred's Fish House! We ordered the prime rib, grilled vegetables, ribeye, and loaded baked potato last week. This meal truly hits all the marks for a perfect dinner.
Let's start with the prime rib - this cut of beef is known for its tenderness and flavor, and it did not disappoint in this dish. The meat was cooked to perfection, with a crispy exterior and a juicy, pink center. It was seasoned beautifully with just the right amount of salt and pepper, letting the natural flavor of the beef shine through. The side of creamy horseradish knocked it out of the park. Every bite melted in my mouth and left me wanting more.
The grilled vegetables were a great accompaniment to the prime rib. They were perfectly cooked, still retaining their crunch while also being tender and flavorful. The mix of cauliflower, broccoli, greenbeans, and red peppers complemented the beef perfectly and provided a refreshing break from the rich flavor of the meat.
Now, onto the ribeye - another delicious cut of beef that was cooked to absolute perfection. This steak was juicy and flavorful, with a rich, buttery taste that was truly mouthwatering. It was a generous serving size.
And finally, the loaded baked potato. This side dish was the perfect addition to the meal - a crispy-skinned potato that was filled with butter, sour cream, bacon bits, cheddar cheese, and chives. It was the ultimate indulgence and added a comforting, homestyle touch to the meal.
Overall, I would highly recommend this meal to anyone looking for a satisfying and delicious dinner. The prime rib, grilled vegetables, ribeye, and loaded baked potato were all executed perfectly and worked together to create a truly unforgettable...
Read moreMy wife and I were in Batesville, about an hour and a half from home, and were told to try Fred's Fish House. This was on 11/20/19 at about 3pm, we pull in and there were only about 4 or 5 people in the restaurant eating. My wife and I decided to go to wash up before picking a table. The men's room can only be described as atrocious.... It is a single toilet bath room and the trash can was overflowing with paper towels, they were on the floor too, the toilet was clean but the ceiling had many many cobwebs on it and the air vent was also covered in very old dust... This bathroom had not be cleaned on this day and obviously the ceiling and air vent had not been cleaned in months. I can not rate the food because the state of both bathrooms forced us to leave and go somewhere else. My wife also said there was a toilet int the women's room all taped shut with duct tape! There were also 2 employees (adult ladies) just setting at a couple tables when we walked in as they were not busy at all. Just be warned if the bathrooms looked like this we questioned the cleanliness of the kitchen facilities and...
