I really kept an open mind here, with high hopes of a great experience. However, I want to give some background on my knowledge, first, before leaving this review.
Since 2014 me and my wife have travelled all over the east coast, sometimes separate and sometimes together, to eat at BBQ joints and drink at breweries. I also had my own bbq company dedicated to weekend catering for several years before covid shut down events, and have since moved on without getting back into it. So needless to say we're always excited to see "Beer & BBQ" as an option when visiting a new area. Berkeley Springs Brewing Company is somewhere around my 500th brewery and "bbq" stop. We formed our opinion based on a few key things, like we always do:
Cleanliness Beer selection/menu Food menu Service Beer quality Food quality Price
A couple things to mention here, we only sat outside, not inside so I cannot comment on the inside staff or experience. Outside seating needs some work, not a level spot at any table, and only 2 tables which were taken had umbrellas. I mean, we love sitting outside, it's always our go to choice but we should have asked to move if we were not happy, so that's on us.
Beer selection and food selection is poor, I really cannot understand the other reviews I've read that state this place has a great selection of beer and food, because thats simply not the case. Mostly IPAs, one sour (which I got, and had to give to my wife) and some "hard seltzer teas" that were almost too bad to get down (my wife ordered). AGAIN, this is not our first time looking at a tap list, and we have had worse, so we just sucked it up and didn't waste it. The sour was pretty good though, I did enjoy that.
The BBQ, this is what did us in, we got the "BBQ sampler" and I know reheated bbq when I see it and that's what we got. Now, this is a very difficult task I will say, especially when you do not have a large turnover of customers to feed and make large portions of BBQ. However, the pulled pork was beyond dry, it was definitely packed, frozen, thawed, reheated and then served to us. The brisket was grey, dry and sliced incorrectly, clear signs of a cook who's winging it on the pit. My son wanted a burger but they didn't offer that as an option, instead he got a brisket SLIDER for $12 and a side of Mac for even more money, no option to make a meal which is the first time we have seen that, a bit of a money grab from kids in my opinion.
Our waitress was excellent, no complaints whatsoever there. Friendly, punctual, knowledgeable and did an outstanding job. Thank you!
Overall, we spent $89 with a tip, for 3 people (2 adults, 1 kid). Let me reiterate the items: 2 sour mango beers (good) 1 hard peach seltzer (bad) 1 BBQ sampler - brisket, pulled pork, turkey, collard greens, beans, potato salad, coleslaw, bbq sauce, mustard, garlic aioli, cornbread (bad) 1 brisket slider (kids menu $12) w/ side of Mac for extra cost (bad) -2 root beer slushies (good)
I see the company likes to respond to the bad reviews telling people they should have said something if the beer/food wasn't great. We all know what kind of image it is to complain, so most people will not do that, including us, only if it is truly that horrible or raw/undercooked, which ours was not. If you're going to offer these items, then please make sure you have the proper training and equipment to offer the best results. This seemed like someone was ambitious but gave up shortly after, and for that we...
Read moreHad a wonderful experience at BSB. Sarah and I went here to get away from the "Honey Do List" for a couple days. We had reservations at their Bed n Brew Lodging, which was amazing. The perfect place for a couple to just get away. A small kitchenette, Queen Bed, and Full Bath. Our place overlooked their outside seating area, can't wait till the weather warms up. The beers we tried first were "Oatmeal Raisin Stout 14%" and "Raspberry Sour"(Sorry we Drank them out of this-not really, hopefully we can convince Karl to make another sour.) both were beyond our expectations. We then found out they not only had beers but some wonderful Kombucha's and Tea's with and without alcohol. So the next round was a flight of Kombucha's and Tea's. I liked the "Peach Tisane 3.4%" and she liked "Earl Grey Tea 4%" and both enjoyed "MyMosa Kombucha 6.3%" At this point we were getting hungry, she had "The Becky - Turkey Swiss On Wheat (House smoked turkey breast topped with Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing on toasted marbled rye.)", I had "Boozy Brisket On A Brioche Bun (Slow smoked dry rubbed sliced brisket, topped with in house made pineapple-teriyaki amber ale BBQ sauce.), they were both so good, we both ate off each other’s plate. Ended up having so much fun talking to the owners and other patrons, at one point the staff had the whole bar singing "Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver", ended up never going into to Berkley Springs.
We stayed there Saturday night, we were awoken with wonderful smells of them preparing for Sunday Brunch. By the time we got up and ready they were open and went down stairs for again another wonderful meal. I had "The Breakfast Smash (Sliced potatoes topped with 2 eggs, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, diced tomatoes, and fresh spinach. Added the Brisket and some Beer Cheese on top.)" She had "Paddy’s Delight (Slow roasted sliced corned beef, topped with an over medium egg, swiss cheese, and fresh spinach. Served on toasted rye with a side of cream cheese. Added side of Beer Cheese). Way more food than either of us could have eaten. Of course we had to get their Brewpub Mamosa and Brewpub Bloody Mary. The owners came in to eat their breakfast, got talking having another great time with them and their patrons. We ended up having so much fun did not make it to Berkley Springs again and ended up not leaving until 5:30. Thank you for a wonderful time away from all the craziness in the world these days. We will be back again as soon as we can get away. But I think we got enough beer and Peach Tisane to go we might last a couple of weeks before we need...
Read moreVisited at a slow time. Group of 6 was sat at one of the long skinny tables, and we were offered by the waitress to merge a couple high-tops instead - which we should have done. I'd say they should definitely fill those first, and it seemed like the people that were familiar with the place were all sitting at the high-tops instead. "But why are you talking about the tables?" Well, this is because the long skinny tables they are using are meant to be temporary (probably get cleared for a dance floor) and are extremely wobbly. Probably a bad idea for a place that wants you to have multiple beverages on the table! We ordered a few of the specials, and a few other meals, and the brisket and pulled pork were the winners by far. I opted for the chicken n waffle, and regretted that choice. TBH I knew better but I missed a good chicken n waffle from another place and has hoping for the best. The pork and brisket were very good and tender, but the sides and portions in general were kind of small (for a typical American place serving BBQ). For it being a 'brewpub' I guess the portions were on par, and the salad my wife got with pork on it seemed to actually be the biggest meal amongst us (recommend). Oh yeah, there were beers! We sampled two of their seltzers and a few of the beers. The apple butter ale was distinct and pairs well with their apple butter bbq sauce. The earl grey blended seltzer was very nice and light. We generally...
