I pass through Belhaven a few times each year and usually have a hamburger at the local spot near the water. I was in the mood for Mexican today and gave El Mariachi a try. To be generous, I’d call the decor "exuberant.” Service was prompt, but there was a bit of a language barrier. Hey, I respect anyone who tries to speak a second language, so no ding there. I ordered the half portion lunch sized shrimp fajitas. There was certainly a gracious plenty: three tortillas; onions, green peppers, shrimp on a hot platter; lettuce, tomato, sour cream, guacamole; and refried beans with a little cheese melted on top. It was a really nice lunch. I’d go back.

Bright atmosphere with tasty, affordable Mexican food. The menu is quite large and there are specials most days. Today is Saturday so we ordered the special drinks! $5 - Large House Margarita & $4.99 - Large Mug of Draft Beer I ordered Enchiladas (1 chicken, 1 seasoned beef, 1 cheese) and my Sweetie ordered the Mariachi Burrito (chicken with mole sauce). Both came with a side of rice and a bit of salad. As is the case at many Mexican restaurants you get complimentary chips and salsa. We left nicely satisfied and with leftovers for another meal for around $30!

This review is based on what kind of restaurant this is. Not some elevated fushion kinda thing just really tasty traditional Mexican. The food was hot, yummy and large portions (we ordered too much). Friday is $5 margaritas and they were huge and well made. If I had one thing I would change, not that it wasn't good, but I like my queso con chorizo with pieces of chorizo in it. This was swirled with chorizo juice or something.

We've been here multiple times in the past and always ordered to go and had great experiences. Today, 6/16/24, we went in for a late lunch for my mother-in-law's birthday. Normally, we have NO problems. The food, service and everything is usually amazing and while our waitress, Esperanza, was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and deserves a raise, we were more than bothered by something else that happened. My husband ordered a mixed drink and the waitress we had couldn't make it (THIS wasn't her fault and we're not holding it against her. In fact, Esperanza communicated with us better than any waitress ever has. She kept up on how kind it would be for our food and checked on us several times.)

When the other waitress went to make the drink, however, it took her more than 20 minutes to make the drink. (She took a moment to answer the phone, which is fine and understandable.) Instead of making the drink and bringing it over (or giving it to Esperanza to bring over,) she stopped making the drink to talk to a man at the bar (personal conversation) for several minutes and eventually got around to making the drink.

Once it was finally made, she placed it on the bar. However, it wasn't visible to our waitress and sitting in an obscure place so, it took another 10 minutes before the waitress that made the drink told Esperanza that it was ready. (Esperanza was actually heading to ask if it was ready because it had been so long.) It took 30 minutes for him to be served a mixed drink that had sat on the bar and melted and got watered down.

When he finally got the drink, my husband was upset because it was watered down and you could barely even taste the drink. (This was a $10 dollar mixed drink.) He couldn't drink it because it was so watered down it tasted horrible. He ended up asking Esperanza to take it from the table and get him something else to drink. She was amazing. She apologized profusely. We explained to her that we understood it wasn't her fault and that we were not holding it against her. She was doing her job well.

We understand that sometimes people get busy and things happen, but today was a Sunday and when we were there it was not busy at ALL. There was one other table other than us at the time and our waitress was also taking care of them so that the other waitress could make the drink that took forever and melted. (If she needed a break maybe just ask?)

We love this place, it's one of our favorites because everything is usually so amazing. We were just a little upset to feel like we wasted $10 in a time where everything is so very expensive. That is fine if the reasons why we love this place so much; because of how much food we get for the money. We're just very, very...

Very disappointed, ordered chicken fajitas for two take out. When I arrived home, we opened a container that was filled with what looked like every scrap of food they had left, except chicken. Chilli looking hamburger, shrimp, hunks of pork not sliced up and maybe some beef and a few vegetables in it. Not chicken fajitas. When I called to tell her the wrong order received, manager on duty tried not to make it right and kept telling me we would have to pay again for chicken fajitas! I had already spent 31 dollars and even left a tip for being so nice, except when I realized at home order was wrong. Saturday night at 6:00 I would have expected the restaurant to be busy, only one table of 3 people in dining room. This should have been my clue that things were not as it should be. We will not be going back, no worries, I’ll not chance it again. I’m so disappointed because I had really hoped we were getting a great place to have Mexican food. So very few places to eat...

Monday around 12:20, my wife and I stopped in for lunch. Cute place for a sit down meal. it was a slow lunch period with few customers. The young man who waited on us was not very expressive... he forgot the straws, it took us 15 min to flag him down for these. One of our two meals was incorrect and needed to be remade. We felt the staff was disinterested in us.

The food was not impressive...

When we asked for our check...it had three meals figured. We asked for the correction and with a sheepish grin we were provided with the corrected bill. I left a modest tip, however was moved to provide my impressions.

All in all, we would not return...not at lunch on a...
