Let's start with the positives. The food is PERFECT. The chef and his team are absolutely incredible. A wellington is a difficult dish to get right, especially when you're serving dozens of them on any given night. I had assumed, in the interest of the kitchen, that they wouldn't bother to ask for a temperature on the wellington and simply serve it the way it should be served, somewhere between medium rare and medium. But they did ask. I told them medium and when I cut into the wellington, it was a spot-on perfect. That alone warrants high praise, but the wellington was also served with a medley of vegetables and a wonderful sauce dotted around the plate that added an incredible brightness and offset the rich meatiness of the wellington. All the food we had struck that same balance, proving there's an expert understanding of ingredients and mastery of technique on show here.
The problem was the front of house. We arrived about five minutes early for our reservation and were told it would be a moment as tables finished up before we were seated. No problem. We were guided to a lounge area and sat there for 35 minutes waiting. Here's a recap of that time: We had been told someone would come to take our drink order. She came after about ten minutes, realized we didn't have a menu and left to grab one. Fifteen minutes later she came back and asked if we were ready to order. We reminded her we didn't get a menu and she left again. Another five minutes. We finally got the menu shortly before we were seated. A sidenote here. About fifteen minutes after we got to the lounge, a couple left their table. It took them the remaining 20 minutes to go clear the table, reset it, and seat us. I live in Chicago, so I am undoubtedly biased and accustomed to restaurants turning tables in seconds out of necessity, but 20 minutes is just way too long. After we finally got seated, the same woman who had forgot about our drinks stopped by and announced she'd be our waitress. I was not happy at this development. She assured us that now we "had her undivided attention", seemingly because her tip was now on the line. She was okay after that, although she did neglect to tell us the specials for the day, something we discovered after another table got served a soup we were never offered and that wasn't on the menu. The hostess also came back to ask for the name on the reservation. Not sure why that happened. Maybe to confirm that they were indeed over a half hour late in seating us? I thought it may have been to comp our drinks for the wait, but no such luck. All in all, service was a bit of a nightmare.
This place will test the limits of the phrase "worth the wait", but I can't say it's not worth the wait. Granted, for the price and the caliber of experience you'd expect, you shouldn't have to wait, but if you do, at least rest assured the food will make you lean back in your chair with a contented sigh, having savored the best meal you've had or will have in a long time. My sincerest thanks and gratitude to the back of the house for a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe feel obligated to write a review after our dining experience, as the overwhelming positive reviews are misleading. We would not recommend this restaurant, especially considering the many other options in Galena. Our experience was so poor and bizarre we joked between ourselves about whether we were on a hidden camera show and the host would pop out at any moment.
The positives: Beef Wellington was perfectly prepared Staff was generally kind The exterior grounds were beautiful
Our negative experiences: The website has a ghost page you can click on for a cocktail menu that leads nowhere. This makes sense now. There is a list of liquor in their menu and when we asked for a cocktail menu we were told āWe donāt have one but they know how to make pretty much anything you could want.ā OK great. Well they had no bartender so it seems like your waitress makes your cocktail. It took 20 minutes to get our drinks and my old fashioned came with crushed ice and tasted like alcohol mixed with tap water. An average old fashioned would be fine, but this felt almost like a prank was being pulled on me. We sat in a nearly empty, silent room for the majority of our dinner. Two staff came in and noted how quiet it was (even when the room filled up) and finally someone pulled out a Bluetooth speaker and started playing music from a phone. Inconsistent service. We were the first seated in a room. Another couple came in about 5-10 min later. We had different waitresses. We sat there for literally 20-30 minutes without anything but water at our table and the other table had drinks, bread, and even their appetizers.
It was an overall strange experience that left us baffled at where the shining reviews came from (except for the food, perhaps?). We do not recommend this restaurant for even an average night out, and especially not a celebration or...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDining at Edge at Gildmoor Inn was one of the best experiences of my life. They really are the gold standard of fine dining, rivaling some of the 5-star establishments in downtown Chicago, River North, and River West. The food and service were impeccable and so was the attention to detail. My husband and I visited for our anniversary in August 2025 and we were beyond impressed with the quality, innovation and care put into the entire experience. The setting is a beautiful property along the Mississippi River that resembles a medieval castle. We had a beautiful view, overlooking the river and the horizon just as the sun was setting. To top it off, a couple of freight trains went by as we ordered our soup. Our server Chris was amazing, warm, and engaging. Every dish was well thought out and carefully executed. We ordered the elk chops for two, and they were presented on a turn table with a strawberry salad, a roasted eggplant and veggie medley, and a mushroom reduction for the elk. The chops were perfectly cooked medium. I feel like describing it is not doing it justice. If you have the opportunity, just go, you won't regret it. Just to add, even the dessert was a work of art. Stone fruit with pistachio cake, consisting of poached cherries and peaches, with cherry coulis and fresh creme. I can't describe how wonderful it was. I'll just say, before we left, we had to give compliments to the chef and we were allowed into the kitchen to speak with him. We were also so impressed that he acknowledged that it's a team effort and gave credit to his team. Altogether, it was a truly...
