THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!!! When the weather starts to break toward Spring in mid-March, there's an entire region that starts buzzing about opening day at the Tropical Treat, or as the locals affectionately call it, "The Treat". To give you an idea of as to how much the opening of The Treat is looked forward to, on opening night, they're selling an average 3 - 4 burgers a minute!! The Treat stays open 6 days a week. Always closed on Sundays and I believe, major holidays. They close in mid to late September for the winter...til Spring comes around again... and the tradition carries on! The Tropical Treat has been a landmark of the Hanover, PA area since the mid 1950's. The menu hasn't changed much in it's 60 plus years. You'll always find the originals "The Fatboy", think a better Big Mac, " The French Poodle", a delicious deep fried hot dog, and some of the most mindblowingly awesome fried chicken, actually "broasted", that your taste buds will ever experience. You've got all of your other favorite sides and classic 1950's drive in fare, and several rotating featured flavors of soft serve ice cream, as well as sundaes, banana splits, and more! All made hot, delightful and fresh by a fast and friendly cook and wait staff. On any given night it can get crowded...and I totally mean crowded..and the lines can get long. Fear not though, because you can order all your goodies ahead of time, and it'll be hot and ready by the time you arrive. Another great thing about this historic drive in is the regular cruise nights and car shows throughout the summer, which regularly draws well over 100+ cars!! Check with the waitresses for the car show schedule, who by the way, will bring your order to your car, if you're lucky enough to slip into one of the coveted spaces under the canopy, complete with the original electronic menu/communicators!! If you arrive in the early evening...5PM is the usual opening time, bring the kids because they may get to see the resident chickens, goats, and other live in critters. Trust me, you will "DIG" this "NEAT" and "MIGHTY KEEN" 50's drive in, and you'll come away knowing you've found yourself a...
Read moreAlways come here with my family. I have been coming to the Treat since I was 10, I just turned 20 in January. My father has been coming since he was in his 20s and he is 58. I bring my friends to the treat as well and it's an hour drive.
The food is traditional drive-in food. Cheeseburgers, french fries, crab cakes, chicken, pizza, etc. Their signature sandwich is a Fat Boy, which I have never tried but heard you love it or you don't. Their fries and onion rings are never overly greasy and you can tell they change their grease regularly.
The service is exceptional. Of all the times I've been there (which has long passed 100) they have only ever messed up my order twice. The time you wait can vary for your order. I have been there opening week and waited for an hour. Other times I have only waited 10-15 minutes on a normal day. A lot of times the hold up seems to be the fryers, as they have a lot of french fry/onion ring orders. Ice cream always comes out right away, they have a girl just on ice cream bc of how much they sell
Food is exceptional. Meat is always cooked well, rolls are steamed. French fries are unsalted and are still wonderful. Food is never greasy. They never let the food sit too long so it's always hot coming out. Love the selection of drinks, plenty of carbonation and not too syrupy like some places I've gone. Prices are cheap enough and food portions aren't oversized like many...
Read moreMy better half and I have stopped here for ice cream in the evenings in summer several times. Always enjoy the ice cream and the ambiance of eating under the trees. Service is typically quick, and most of the young help are very accommodating and courteous. It's a night's adventure. Was just the opposite. Our server was very rushed and trying to get her order. We got a waffle cone Sunday and when it was handed to us the whipped cream was already sliding down the side of it. We asked for a cup to put it in since it looked like it was not going to last very long. That got an eye roll and attitude from the server. My wife turned around to leave the counter and the entire half of the Sunday fell off the waffle cone to the ground. We then approached the server and simply asked if we could get some additional whipped cream added to the waffle cone that was now upside down in our cup and again was met with a lot of resistance and more attitude. She reluctantly added more whipped cream as we explained that we didn't even get away from the counter before it collapsed the first time. Manager, we spoke to the manager and he apologized and offered a gift certificate which we refused. We simply hope that he addresses the issue with the servers who are the front line for dealing...
