Ringing Endorsement for Burr Trail Grill!

OUR FAILURE TO GET FOOD AT THE 'OTHER RESTAURANT': Our group of five arrived in Escalante on a hot afternoon after a long drive down the mountain. We were very hungry and ready to refuel. We went to ANOTHER RESTAURANT. It took a bit to get seated, and then we waited... for anyone inside to come out and make contact. My hubby tried unsuccessfully to find someone to get us menus. But after 35-minutes of waiting, we left our table and drove away. At this point, we were starving and considered just stopping at Subway.

OUR BAD LUCK ENDS: Ultimately, we chose to drive 37-minutes to Boulder to try out the Burr Trail Grill. And that's why I gave the OTHER RESTAURANT a 2-star review. As a thank you for ignoring us, because we went to Burr Trail Grill and had the BEST meal of our entire trip.

GREAT WAIT STAFF WITH GREAT SERVICE: We were seated within seconds of walking in the door and immediately given menus and water. After a quick perusal, we went to the desk and ordered, and after 20-minutes, five meals appeared at the table... fresh, warm, and perfect. (We even went back again the next day for lunch.)

FAVORITES DISHES: My hubby and Mother-In-Law (MIL) are snobbish about their Reuben sandwiches, but both agreed this is their favorite they've ever had. I could easily eat their fried green tomatoes weekly for the rest of my life... so amazing. The flavors were divine. My niece/nephew tried the French Dip and loved it. How in the world does that bun stay crispy, even when dipping? The next day we tried the wings! (How can something be so perfectly sweet and spicy at the same time?) I tried the lamb burger which had a mild lamb taste and was very juicy and yummy paired with the cheese crumbles and cucumber ribbons.

DESSERTS: Apple pie was delightful. Chocolate whiskey pie was AMAZING. The next day we tried Cherry and Peach, along with another chocolate. We rated the pies in this order: Apple and chocolate whiskey were tied for best. Next up was the cherry, and last was the peach, though none of us would complain about eating any of them.

We were craving food from there the next day after we got home. Guaranteed we'll stop at this spot every time we are in the area.

TWO THINGS TO NOTE: The menus listed on Yelp are outdated. The prices during our visit were actually LOWER, and they offer less food choices, possibly due to Covid. Also, if you Google Burr Trail Grill, the hours of operation are different than what's listed. They have weekday and weekend hours. Best to call and listen to the recording to get the current hours...

Subpar Grease burger, leftover hamburger bun grilled cheese sandwich and over seasoned to a point of tasting burnt fries and a cole slaw that tastes like it's been bathed in vinaigrette. Barely got 2 bites of the burger before my husband was SOAKED in grease and the burger lacked flavor. Sodas are those 1$ vending machine cans but cost 3 $ no refills. The kids frie wedges were heavily flavored and covered in what appeared to be a breaded seasoning that crumbles off and gets all over you.. 40 for a burger and a kids grilled cheese and we left with over half of our plates left ..... Used to love coming here but seems like they let the idea of being one of the only restaurants in the area get to their head.... Next time I'll spend the 40$ in gas to get subway in Torrey ....

Also 3 tables we tried to sit at were super sticky and the trays they gave my son were leaving a weird dirt spot when it got slightly wet below... If I could do 0 stars I would have......

The cheapest meal was 17$ burger and it was not worth it the most expensive fish trout was 28$

Appetisers were like...

This is a great place to stop for a bite to eat after a day on the trails or out and about. After a morning on the trails we ate lunch at the Burr Trail Grill. The staff taking our order at the counter were very helpful and recommended various dishes as their favorites. We were a party of four and we ordered hamburgers and the Ruben sandwiches. The roasted garlic potato wedges were delicious and the coleslaw was a nice contrast to the sandwich. Soft drinks and beer are available. There are a lot of menu options. We enjoyed out food on their outdoor dining patio. There is indoor seating but the day was too beautiful to sit inside, and the outside dining was a nice option. We could not resist and had to order the homemade peach-bourbon pie with vanilla custard and the apple- caramel pie with vanilla custard. They were delicious. Highly recommend, when we return to the area we will...

This restaurant defies logic and brings you into the world of magic and serendipity. Driving along the backroads of the Dixie National Forest and popping into Boulder Town seemed surreal when we found this gourmet restaurant at the turnoff to the Burr Trail. Sure, plenty of small towns have that one or two cool hangout spots these days, however few towns 5 times larger than Boulder Town have a restaurant and pleasant cafe atmosphere like this one. After days of highway food (burgers and sandwiches) and camp fare (real, real simple), we were craving salad and greens. The menu at the Burr Trail Grill blew our minds and we had salads and the most amazing appetizer I believe that I have ever eaten: Risotto Cakes. Sit outside in the shade of the giant trees and enjoy a brew with your meal. All will be right with your world.

This felt like a bougie meal in a huge city and not a counter serve restaurant in a small town. It was really great! We ordered the fried tomatoes (best I've ever had...seriously and I'm picky with my tomatoes!), the mild spicy chicken sandwich (such a unique flavor with the Thai peanut sauce and slaw...chicken was so crispy!) and the lamb burger (local lamb sold us even if we're not typically lamb people). We ordered their coleslaw as our side and I love a vinegar based slaw. Every meal was super well made! It was pricey but worth it. Especially with limited options around, this was a gem. No pies are available anymore...were told the woman who used to make them retired but they had some wrapped cookies and a vanilla custard on the menu. We've starred this place for future excursions!
