This restaurant/bar is a must see just for it's history. The Alto Bar opened in 1900 so raise a beer to history! It is actually one of the oldest bars in Michigan! The Alto Bar had lost all of its grace and charm over the last several decades to degrade to an absolute dive bar before Covid. It smelled like an ashtray and had lost its historical charm. During Covid it was completely remodeled and updated to be an absolute pleasure to visit. They claim to have the greatest selection of whiskey in Michigan and it is a very impressive collection. We only had the fried fish which seemed to have come pre-prepared from a food service but apparently the hamburgers are to die for if you're a hamburger fan. The owner has doubled the square footage of the bar and it is staffed with wonderful employees. Give it a try!

Visited Alto en route to Grand Rapids and was shocked by the great quality and service for such a small establishment. The waiter/bartender/was really welcoming and kind. They pride themselves on having the largest Bourbon selection in MI. As you can see in the photo, they have earned that title hands down!

We were quite surprised when we entered, it was freshly remodeled, nice atmosphere in which we told the waitress we’ve never been there before and really liked it. She told us their specialty was the steaks so my husband ordered a T-bone and I ordered the ribeye. Unbeknownst to us we didn’t know the steaks were going to be a HALF OF A COW when they came! Both steaks were ordered medium but the T-bone looked good on the outside but was so rare my husband couldn’t eat it and my Medium cooked ribeye was burnt on outside and well done inside tough and VERY grizzly. I was also disappointed that my steak took up the whole plate so I felt like I had to dig through the food to get to the steak while the side dishes were falling off my oval plate that it was on. Our biggest shock of the night was when we got the $140.00 bill for 2 Steak dinners and three adult beverages!!!! I feel the waitress possibly should’ve told us the size of the steaks and what each one cost especially when she knew we had not ever been there before. I can’t say we will not return but next time we will probably order off the menu because we certainly would not have paid $75 for a T-bone steak and $55 for a ribeye!!! I feel the waitress fell short on education especially when is their specialty this the reason for...

There was a lot of hype around this place and my wife and I were underwhelmed.

We went for the Friday steak night thinking they had all the steaks listed on their webpage (ribeye, ny strip, wagyu tenderloin, and wagyu ny strip) and they only had NY strip and Ribeye. My wife is picky with steak and the tenderloin would have been perfect, but not the end of the world. So we ordered the $50 ribeye their known for and split it. The cut was one of the ends and had a lot of grizzle. We asked for medium and the outside of the steak was well (gray) and the middle was rare. I would not order it again.

We also went to check out their bourbon selection. They definitely have a lot of whiskeys, but they are pricey and any of the allocated bourbons are really marked up. One of the pours was $22 for a bottle they're paying under $50 for. I get supply and demand, but thats taking advantage of the situation.

No issues with service. The waitress was attentive and got our drinks quickly.

We may have just had a bad trip, but I don't think we'll be up for driving 30 minutes again and risk making another...

I've been a lover of Alto Bar for a longggg time as I'm a local, so I'm a bit bias, but it really is a fantastic little small-town gem. Great people, the best burgers (try the Thunder Burger, thank me later 😉), andddd the steaks for Steak Night Fridays are locally sourced and delicious beyond measure! (Make a reservation for steak night, though, it fills up fast!)

I'm a seeker of dive bars coast-to-coast and would have equated the Alto Bar as such for a long time. However, with COVID came a remodel that removed that classification, much to my own personal dismay and sadness, but everyone else seems to love it.

It's a bright and vibrant vibe now, much more the feel of a bar in the city than one in small-town USA, but every other important detail (the people, the food) have been left intact and are...
