We had really high hopes for this place and were quite disappointed. I'll start by saying that if you are fully vaccinated and not observing any covid protocols, you probably would have a somewhat better view about the experience. We decided to eat indoors because the place had very high ceilings and good ventilation. The place was somewhat busy, but service was very slow, even taking that into account. Our server was friendly but took our order with her mask on her chin, not even covering her mouth. We waited more than an hour for our food, and when it arrived, it didn't even feel like it had just been cooked. It also was incorrect but it had taken so long to get the food that we were not going to ask for it to be fixed. They have a neat kids gimmick where they let kids design their own pizza. For some reason, the child's pizza was delayed, and our food grew cold while we waited for it, almost another 10 minutes (going on close to an hour and a half since we sat down at this point). We had just started eating when a table next to us broke out in a barber shop quartet. Had it not been covid, we would have thought it was a neat thing to happen in a small town restaurant, but given that it is still covid and singing at full voice has been linked to super spreader events, it made us incredibly uncomfortable. Our food sat there once again as we put on our masks while they sang. Before we could do anything about it, the group broke out into another song. Finally, we just picked up our plates and moved to an open table in their small patio. (There was not one available when we first arrived.) The patio area was swarming with flies because dishes had not promptly been cleared from the other table, but we preferred covering our cups and swatting them away while eating our mediocre, cold food than we did staying inside. What was supposed to be an adventuresome, enjoyable food stop was a two-hour mess that put a damper on the rest of our day.
The pluses were the kid's pizza (my child said making it was one of the highlights of her day), watching the baby birds in the nest on the patio, and their eagles nest dessert, which was sinfully fun.
Yes, we made a calculated risk to eat inside, but we were clearly more covid cautious than staff or patrons, and we did not appreciate the...
Read moreWe had really high hopes for this place based on the reviews and the billboard advertising “best chicken fried steak in Texas”. We even drove in 40 minutes from north Waco to give it a try.
6:30pm on a Sunday this place was about half full. They had two waiting staff to help us out. The girl who served us took our drink order and appetizer order. We ordered the loaded potato wedges and some sweet teas. The loaded potato wedges were actually really good. The fries were really crispy and fresh. The bacon was good on it. The cheese was the same type of cheese you would find at those gas stations or ball parks. Our sweet tea was REALLY sweet. Even for people who love sweet tea this tea was too sweet. Unless this was a less common sweetness, advice is to get the half and half if you’re expecting traditional sweet tea.
We ordered our food and I got a side salad, chicken fried chicken, and Mac n cheese. My partner ordered the chicken fried steak, Mac n cheese, and a salad. My partners mom ordered the chicken steak fingers, side salad, and the loaded mashed potatoes.
The salads were really disappointing. I think having a little cheese, maybe a few croutons, and less onions would have helped. The chicken fried steak had too much breading. It took many cuts to find the steak. The Mac n cheese seemed like it was velveeta Mac n cheese in the box. My chicken fried chicken was really good and honestly the chicken fried steak was also really good. I think the steak fingers (I had a bite honestly) were better than the rest of the chicken fried dishes.
Our server wasn’t very attentive to our table unfortunately. We didn’t have our drinks for awhile after we got our appetizer. We had empty drinks for the majority of our meal waiting for refills.
Salad: 2 out of 5 Mac n cheese: 2 out of 5 Tea: 3 out of 5 (tea flavor was good but too sweet) Chicken fried steak: 3 out of 5 Chicken fried chicken: 4 out of 5 Chicken fried steak fingers: 4 out of 5 Loaded potato wedges: 4 out of 5 Service: 2 out of 5
Overall 3 out of 5. Maybe it would have been a 4 had the service been better and the salads were better.
We would go back but really only if it were convenient like on the way from or...
Read moreEdit Not once were we told that we had a new waitress based on the business’s reply below.
We stopped at this restaurant on our way through town on a weekend trip due to top reviews and photos seen on Google making the restaurant look good. When we pulled up, it looked busy which seemed like a good sign. We waited a few minutes for a table and noticed pretty quickly that a waitress was coughing and sniffling all over the restaurant. As we sat down, the waitress (that was clearly sick) took our drink order then came back a few minutes later with the drinks. She gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and decide what we wanted then came back to take our order. The sweet tea tasted like the water was from a muddy puddle and the Dr Pepper tasted like it had no syrup (and expected it to taste much better considering Dr Pepper is made not even an hour from the restaurant). Our food came out maybe 15 minutes later brought by another waitress who also brought us new drinks when we said they tasted badly. We never were checked on by any employee after that. I ordered the cheeseburger with fries and ranch. The party was oddly shaped, had a not normal smell and was tough. The fries and ranch were the only thing I enjoyed. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak (apparently their signature dish) with brown gravy (was actually mushroom gravy), Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes. The chicken fried steak was tough, the gravy was good, Mac and cheese had no flavor and same with the mashed potatoes. We ate as much as we could before deciding we were ready to leave. We waited at least 15 minutes for someone to at least come check on us yet no one did. I had to go to the desk to ask for our check and the sick waitress acted shocked that I wanted the ticket. We paid and left and will...
