We ate here the first time tonight, after being told this was one of the best Chix Fry Steak in the area.
Upon arriving, there was plenty of parking, and lots of seating available.
On entering we were warmly greeted and given our pick of tables. It was very clean, decorated in a kitschy and country, but fun, style.
We ordered iced teas, and cheese fries appetizer. The teas were large and tasty, not just tea colored water like some places. The appetizer was good sized, and passable. Not great but decent.
I ordered a Chix Fry Chicken, mashed and gravy, green beans. My wife opted for the Chix Fry Steak, potato, and salad. Order was correct and prompt. We had barely started our appetizer when dinner arrived.
The chicken was fantastic. Moist, tasty, and perfectly seasoned. The potatoes and veg were bland by comparison. The mash seems to be real potatoes or at least a very good instant, and the gravy was creamy, but both were underwhelming. The green beans had the requisite bacon and pepper, but we're cooked into almost a puree and had no flavor, not even from the bacon.
My wife's salad was the standard diner mix of chopped veg and iceberg. Nothing bad, nothing great.
The Chix fry steak was large, thin, and nicely breaded. Cooked to perfection, and basically fork tender, for an adult at least. It would be considered quite good by some folks, but in this area of the country, our expectations are high with this dish. Sadly it didn't quite deliver. It was a very solid entry, and a simple but pretty good rendition.
It just wasn't great. The chicken on the other hand, was possibly the best we've ever had.
Overall it was a good experience and we plan on visiting again to try some other menu offerings, if we don't just get the chicken again.
I happily recommend it to anyone looking for good,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI'm torn on my review, because not everything was bad but it wasn't good. First impressions the visit didn't start off great. Upon entering I waited to be acknowledged because the wait staff were coordinating seating. Once they finished, a person in my group standing behind me was greeted instead of me. That felt awkward. We were told for a group of 4 it would be a 35 to 45 minute wait. So we decided to wait outside with other parties. We waited for about an hour. After my group was the last party waiting outside, we decided to wait inside. The hostess looked surprised and asked our group's name again then said ok your table is ready. We were then seated back by the bar where multiple tables were open. I guess my party was forgotten about. Regarding the menu, I was happy to see a lot of items marked gluten free. Regarding the food, my husband ordered a burger with fried okra. He said the burger was decent, but the fried okra was soft. Another person in my group ordered the chicken fried steak. He said it was excellent. Another person ordered chopped steak and she liked it. I ordered a pork chop with a side of green beans and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes did not say they came with gravy, but they did. So I couldn't eat them since gravy isn't gluten free. The green beans were just ok, but I had to be careful since some were touching the gravy. The pork chop was not great. It was dense, dry, and bland. I could only eat half because it was not appetizing. All of the dinners were supposed to come with a homemade roll, but we...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst I want to apologize for the picture of a partially eaten meal but I just could not wait to take a bite of this chicken fried steak I had heard so much about. It did not disappoint! The flavor was excellent and tasted like chicken fries used to before all of this preformed, processed crap came along like you get from many restaurants these days. You would be hard pressed to find a better chicken fry in the Wichita area. My business partner had the chicken fried chicken and it was also very good. In fact her portion may have been a little bigger than mine. We were both impressed.
I was a little disappointed in the rolls we received. They were a little hard and dried out. I suspect they were a day or two old. Still they were very good. I also would have preferred for my sides to be a little larger. This is a big steak and I ran out of sides very quickly. The flavors were excellent but I am a big eater so there you have it.
The inside of the place is decorated in a rustic style with a bunch of wood. It is supposed to mimic a barn after all. It is a very cool atmosphere. The place is very clean and the staff is very friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed our meal and the time we spent there. The prices are in line with other comparable restaurants.
I would definitely recommend the short drive out to Burrton and give The Barn a try. It is only about 30 minutes from the west side of Wichita. I will definitely be...
