Arrived at the Fish Net around 1130 for lunch. I ordered the boom boom shrimp and my wife the 2pc. I also ordered a side of clams strips. We had a few other people in our party that for the purposes of the food portion of this review, but will come into play later on.
Service overall was friendly. My salad and the tables sides came out relatively quickly, but wasn't really hot when I got it, suggesting that it sat in the kitchen window a tad longer than it should have.
The boom boom shrimp was decent to say the best. The shrimp was over breaded to the point where I tasted more breading than I did shrimp. The shrimp were popcorn sized, so perhaps if they used regular sized shrimp, even small, would improve this dish greatly. The boom boom sauce, while it was described to me to be similar to bang bang sauce from the skeletal fish, it was nothing like it at all. It was more like a thick, and mildly spicy remoulade, not a glaze. My fries were nothing special, slightly on the cool side, but not inedible. Where my biggest complaint, food wise, comes in is with the clam strips. Having grown up in the north, clam strips were pretty common faire so I know what a good one should taste like. These were obviously frozen, and maybe even freezer burnt, as they tasted rather fishy with a hint of that distinctive freezer burn taste.
My wife's fish was good...cooked decently but nothing to write home about. Her fries were a little warmer than mine, but other than that, nothing special.
A few folks in my group commented that their meals weren't exactly hot either, but overall, decent, if not in need of some salt/spice. Some other folks in my group commented on the fact that they were charged extra for using their debit cards.
Overall, this isn't a place I'd likely make a special trip to. If I was camping at the nearby lake, or staying at one of the resorts nearby, then maybe I'd come here just because its not fast food or chain fast casual that permeates the interstate highway...
Read moreHere’s my honest review on the Fish Net Family Restaurant. Okay, so my family has ate at fish net since the 90s. We’ve celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, family reunions and special occasions many different times. I absolutely love the food there and highly recommend that you try it. Everything has okay, but up until recently. I’ve noticed some obvious changes in there recipes that just didn’t appeal to me. I was big fan of The Captain’s Platter and The Set Up. I’ve always been a big fan of there crab cakes and hush puppies, but up until recently, I noticed a big change in there recipe. I remember when the crab cakes use to be loaded with onion and pepper. They had really good flavor. Unfortunately now, it was just a bland mix of salt and pepper. It tasted more like shell stuffed with corn bread than crab meat and I know I’m not crazy, but I one hundred percent certain that they used to put corn in there hush puppies and I loved that. That’s what separated there dish from any other seafood restaurant. Now the fried shrimp was good, but it didn’t taste like the fried shrimp I grew up with. There wasn’t enough batter and it was a little bit rubbery. The catfish was okay, didn’t exactly have that fresh off the grill taste it used to have. And the fried clam? It was all right, but all I could tasted was the batter and the grease. I was also very disappointed that the fried mushrooms were taken off the menu. That was a important staple for my family. They always ordered fried mushrooms. Well, they had a good thing going. I don’t understand why they changed there recipe. I thought it gave there restaurant that wholesome country hospitality feel to it that appealed to a lot of customers. It actually made me want to go to Lake and spend the days fishing. I usually love there food, but this time it was a little bit bland and it didn’t exactly taste like a southern fried supper to meal. I believe that they can do better and make room for improvements. Oh and bring back the...
Read moreWe made a 7pm reservation for 4. When we arrived the restaurant was very busy. It took a few minutes to be helped at the front door and then about 10 minutes to get our drink order taken. The 5pm rush was finishing up and the restaurant was clearing out. I would recommend not going at the peak time. We had fried green toms and crawfish tails for appetizers. Both were well fried and battered lightly. The set up with beans, slaw, tomato relish and hush puppies was flavorful. I had the creole pasta, which didn't have much of a creole flavor profile but was a nice cream based pasta with large chunks of shrimp and crawfish. The crab cake was bland and not very crisp fried. That was the only real disappointment of the meal. My husband and one of our camping companions ordered the Capts Plate with fries. All items were fried well and the fish had a nice batter and was not fishy tasting. Our other companion ordered the Catfish Lousianne. It was the best dish of the group. The grilled catfish and etouffee on a bed of rice were delicious. She ordered the clam strips also. The drink of the night was a Key Lime Margarita. She ordered rocks and I ordered frozen. They were pre made mix and very sweet. Too sweet for on the rocks but the frozen wasn't bad. All in all the service was slow but having had a full restaurant when we arrived I had anticipated that. The food was good and the pricing was comparable to restaurants we are used to dining in. ($65 for 2 aps, 2 entrees, 1 margarita, and 1 water). I'm sure we will be back as it is a nice place to dine out while camping for one evening with friends and it is close...
