Kallen’s Dive Bar: A Masterclass in Mountain Town Shenanigans
Every mountain town needs a good dive bar, and Kallen’s delivers with flair and just the right amount of chaos. This place is more than a bar; it’s an experience. Our server? A hybrid of bartender/karaoke artist/pool shark/magician who somehow kept our glasses full, our spirits high, and the vibe immaculate. Seriously, it felt like they had a secret cloning device because they were everywhere at once.
The drinks? Top-tier dive bar quality. We stuck with bourbon and vodka because, well, we’re here for a good time, not a fancy wine pairing. The karaoke setup brought the kind of unfiltered joy that only a slightly tipsy crowd of locals can provide. Pro tip: If you’re hesitant to sing, just cue up “Tequila.” It’s got one word, and you’ve got this. This gem of a suggestion comes from the local who insisted in singing this dedicated song to us. A top ten experience.
Food-wise, the menu sticks to classic dive bar fare that won’t win awards but won’t let you down either. The BTA sandwich (because they were out of avocado) turned out to be an unintentional masterpiece. The French fries and ketchup? Honestly, it’s a toss-up which was better – they were both oddly satisfying in that “I’m one drink away from declaring this the best meal I’ve ever had” kind of way.
In conclusion, Kallen’s is exactly what it promises to be: a rowdy, unpretentious dive bar with well-poured drinks, surprisingly entertaining food, and a karaoke scene that might just make you a legend (or at least a meme). We’ll definitely be back – maybe next time we’ll even add a pool game to...
Read moreThis place is a gem. Nested in Sugarloaf, it is the only bar and eatery in this suburb of Big Bear. Kind of a secret place the locals like to keep for themselves, it serves excellent food in sizeable portions and $2.50 beer on tap. What you see in the picture is the aptly named "Triple Bypass Burger" which consists in a thick 1/3 lb. beef patty, lots of pastrami and bacon, a fried egg and several onion rings, everything piled on between a delicious bun freshly taken out of the owen. Normally, this monster of a burger would would feed 3 average sized Americans (or 15 less fortunate citizens of a socialist country). My initial plan was to cut it in two and take half of it home to enjoy the next day. But after taking a bite, I just couldn't stop eating until I finished it all, to my wife and son's amazement. I think this burger is the largest amount of food I have ever engorged in a single dinner table seating, in my entire 56 year life, so it's a kind of personal record. Your mileage may vary. Yeah, and about the Covid Karen people complaining and leaving one star reviews because in this place there are no mask required and the indoor dining room is defiantly open despite Gov. Gavin Gruesome's illegal diktat, here is my message to you: thank you for your bad reviews. Your whining and moaning about the bartender and servers who don't wear face diapers played a major part in my decision to give this place a try, so...
Read moreFood was good. Had western bacon cheeseburger, the sauce and onion rings were awesome. Hubby had Mile high club sandwich, said bread was good but quality of meat could have been better. Also ordered the grilled chicken salad for tonight, so no opinion on that except it looks good. Bartender never approached us after we ordered, even though I did inquire about if they had Jameson. Stood at end of bar to get something to drink while waiting on our food and the bartender never came back to ask what we wanted to drink. When we finally sat at the table waiting for food to be done, the Bartender then went to end of bar to talk with other patrons. I have lived here since 1992 and I used to love going for a drink and good food at the Sugarloafer. Kallans has always had decent food but their service is very much lacking. Knowing this I called 4xs to order Togo and no one answered phone. After going in and telling bartender we tried to order over the phone but Noone answered. She said maybe phone wasn't plugged in. So I tried calling in the restaurant and the phone rang no issues. While waiting for our food the phone rang and she didn't even attempt to answer it. There were 6 people at the bar and one table who was almost done when we arrived. It still took 30mins to get our food, and not to be acknowledged by the bartender and Noone else came in after us. Such a disappointment!!! AND IT WAS...
