Perhaps if we were in a position to try the sushi, our experience would have been better. But we were on our way out to the deep woods and would not eat our food for 4-5 hours after we picked it up to go, so we got fully cooked food: Chicken Teriyaki and Spicy Pork. It was supposed to come with soup, but while we were waiting, the woman brought out soup for us, and told us to sit down and eat it. We wanted it to go. When I told her I did not care to eat my food now (we had a hike ahead of us, and we hike fast for a workout, I did not want a full belly of hot soup on a warm day for an arduous hike), she gave the soup to someone else, rather than putting in a to-go container for us. We did not ask to eat our soup then, and it was very presumptuous to tell us to sit down and eat. So we paid for it for nothing. I had seen pictures online of what looked like teriyaki chicken on a bed of cooked veggies and that's what I thought I was getting, instead I got sticky, sushi rice under my chicken. It was dry and the sauce only got on a bit of the rice, so I ate cold sticky dry rice with dry chicken. It was hard to choke down, and frankly, the sauce left a lot to be desired and there was hardly none of it. The tempura that came with my dish was really greasy like the deep fryer was not to a hot enough temperature when they put it in and it absorbed too much grease. The gyoza were the best thing, and they were good, but not great. The salad was merely iceburg lettuce (who even serves that anymore?) with crushed peanuts and a cream based dressing that tasted like it had 7-up in it or something sweet and fizzy in it. All put together it was not horrible, but very one-note and as someone who LOVES veggies and salad, I did not eat it all. Way too much money to throw that much of it away. My husband's Spicy Pork was better, with a decent amount of sauce, but again served on sticky rice, that should be used for sushi and is not pleasant to just eat. Again, perhaps when we have time to stay and eat it will be better, but for to-go food,...
Read moreAs residents of Placerville, my family and I try to circulate around the local establishments for a dinner out. Unfortunately, up until this evening, we had not been to Shilla. We were VERY impressed. Military family with deployments in Asia, making sushi and other Asian style cuisine difficult to satisfy. The first thing we noticed was the home-made fruit Soju jars at the back of sushi counter (very good sign). The staff were attentive and quick, yet very friendly and hospitable. Once we inquired about the Soju, our waitress quickly offered us a complimentary shot of the pineapple after dinner... which was way to delicious (I could see myself getting into trouble with that stuff :) The cuts of fish were straight up, melt-in-your-mouth, and the prices were comparable to other local establishments. The group behind us were having a bday (they turned on this fantastic bday music on the loud speaker), then continued to share the cake with the rest of the customers. BTW my daughter thought it was the most delicious cake and would LOVE to know where it came from. SHILLA - we will be back soon, thanks for the hospitality on a rainy, windy, Presidents...
Read moreThis place is great. Wonderful people, delicious food and closest sushi to Pollock so the convenience is awesome too. The staff really goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and even give my children little toys and candy when we come in. My only negative experience here is that my husband is a recovering alcoholic and has told them that he no longer drinks, but every time he comes in they still offer him saki. Every time! Even rushed out of the sushi place yesterday saying he forgot his shot and brought it out to him when he was leaving with my daughter. So frustrating! I understand it is a nice gesture on their part, but it is extremely damaging on my end. If he has already told them, they shouldn't forget that sort of thing bc one little slip up could be detrimental for our family. Everything else is great! Just wish they wouldn't influence the alcohol so much. If people don't order it, DON'T...
