I travel a lot, and while I’m traveling I try to avoid fast food or chain restaurants that I have in my home town(other than Jersey Mike’s).

So when I stayed the night in Ukiah, I noticed there weren’t a ton of appealing options in my opinion.

So I ended up at Club Calpella. Im always down for a good hole in the wall, and believe me, the place doesn’t look like much from the outside.

But the outside doesn’t matter right? Never judge a book by its cover and what not.

So I go in and it’s your typical small townish bar, everyone stopped and looked at me, the only person bartender Caroline didn’t know the name of, with a big welcoming smile.

She hands me a menu and I had to ask “what’s the most popular item here” because it all looked great. And she said everything is popular and the menu hasn’t changed in nearly 50 years. That says something to me, like hey I’m good at this, I’m not changing it.

So I settled on the steak sandwich, ordered beer battered fries with it and the soup of the day beef barley.

Let me tell you something.. I’ve eaten a meal in just about every state in this beautiful country, but the standard has been set again.

The steak sandwich was literally a New York strip, cooked perfectly medium, on two pieces of garlic toast, I could have sat the bread aside and had a steak dinner, but I needed to know how to handle this.

The fries were top 10 nationwide and the veggies on the side were perfectly seasoned and way too delicious for vegetables.

The beef barley soup was also homemade and I don’t even know what all was in it but I’d eat that from a hole in the ground.

I love places like this, maybe it’s nostalgia kicking in, but if you took away the small hometown feel of this place and put it in a big city with fancy lights and a brand new building, the food holds up to any star rated restaurant I’ve ever been to.

Thank you so much for welcoming me to the club. If I see my way back here, I will...

After what seemed like a long time ago, we returned to Club Calpella since we were in the area. It's a hidden gem. If you didn't know where it was, you might drive right past it. I'm just glad it survived the lockdown. Many good places didn't. From the street, the actual door is to the far right of the building, but you can go thru the bar to get to the restaurant. The bathrooms are well kept for a bar/restaurant. It can be pricey. Not many restaurants that aren't. Even fast food. We got the appetizer platter, 2 drinks, 2 burgers with salads (which is extra with meals), and that cost us 70. But we had leftovers which covered another meal altogether so it was worth it. The food was really good, tho my burger wasn't as well done as I prefer, it was still very yummy. They even had honey mustard for moms salad, which even our favorite diner in town doesn't have. Food was made promptly, tho it wasn't that busy, and it was early afternoon, so take that as you will. The waitress was really nice and helpful. All in all, it was quite a delicious and...

The food is phenomenal and the ladies in the front of the house have been kind and gracious every time I have been in. The only thing I would say that needs attention is the carpet. It's been a long run for the business and it's time to update the place but that is an expense that comes in a particular time but updating or not you should pull that carpet out. The smell is really bad when you walk in but because I love the food which I get to go because my smaller is just too good and that smell is no good! If I had a magic wand that I could wave to give this place a face-lift I would and if I had the money I would donate it so they could invest in the updating of their place without costing them because they are great people who loves their community they serve. Thankyou club capella for your yummy food and...

This place is a gem. Great service thanks Travis B, simple old school bar/restaurant that has a ton of great options. Bison burger was cooked perfectly. The shrimp wrap was delicious and having these shrimp options shows they get their food from the source. Upgraded to the beer battered fries and ate every single one of them. Good cocktails, cold beer.
