4/24 - Joined a friend in the bar and ordered their salmon and blue cheese hamburger. Both very good.
8/23 - Baked stuffed scrod & shrimp both well made. Scallops & shrimp w/linguine was rich. Salads came with our meals.
6/23 - Escargot, calamari, whole belly clams, fish & chips and a lobster roll made this a fun birthday meal for a family member. No salads. Thanks for the complimentary celebratory cake.
1/18/23 - Excellent escargot and salmon. SFH salads are back.
12/22- Dropped in for two martinis and mussels to see their Christmas decor. Friday night's are packed. Plan ahead.
7/2022 - Lunch for the first time here did not give us salads with our meals! Must be inflation - paid the add-on price for this side. Rolls still come with the meal; white & red sangria were each a success; the stuffed shrimp showed why it's a favorite & the shrimp with sun dried tomatoes & lemon cream sauce on fettuccine executed great flavor but lacked in shrimp.
May 22 - Deep fried oyster app, white wine, salmon and stuffed scrod. All worth the visit as always.
Easy in and out buying a gift card for a friend this mid-October. Took a few pics pre-dinner service.
6/8/2020, we had a wonderful time here on the patio. We actually sat at our table for four 1/2 hours.
Calamari, still crunchy, tender and plentiful. Three of us passed it around until the last piece. The mozzarella sticks weren't thin but thick and stuffed with mozzarella! Amazing. Traditional Saybrook salad had its many ingredients.
With restaurants losing money due to covid state restrictions, businesses need to cut corners somewhere to get back to their usual budget, so the bountiful bread basket patrons know was reduced to 3 rolls that looked to be from a bag and 3 sesame sticks.
The best dinner was the surf and turf option with a 10 oz. top sirloin and 3 stuffed shrimp. The steak was cooked perfectly and came with a vegetable medley. These were THE BEST stuffed shrimp. Full of flavor and ingredients - not some mystery pasty stuffing, celery, drenched butter crumbs, commonly found.
We waited hours for the whole belly clams to be delivered but they did arrive, and our dinner guest was very pleased. The portion was big enough to bring some home as with the steak dinner.
The night's special, Oriental salmon with "Asian style coleslaw" was cooked perfectly w/a small serving of rice underneath. The coleslaw seemed to be out of the store, and there was so much of it at the deli this would be costly. I asked for a take-out container for my partner.
Back to small business needing to cut corners to regain annual profit after being shut down due to virus mandates, our birthday guest was not treated to a free dessert. Months ago, my partner chose a tiered chocolate mousse for his dessert. I understand reopening restaurants not being able to do this now, but buy a large container of ice cream and offer a scoop for celebrants with a candle!
Revisiting here 9/30/19, we were lucky to have the outdoor seating most of the time to ourselves, fine service and great food.
Our two drinks off the special menu were delicious. The calamari (sans red pepper) was still better than most, and the PEI mussels were tender and flavorful. We used the bread basket to soak up the broth.
My lobster roll was good and I appreciated the melted butter on the side. The presentation was a little lacking and a bit sloppy considering the light traffic. The bouillabaisse was excellent with shrimp, salmon, bay scallops, white fish, mussels and clams in a tomato saffron broth. This dish came with Saybrook's traditional salad.
Since it was my companion's birthday, dessert was on the house. We chose the triple chocolate mousse. Delicious, light and creamy.
We've gone here for decades. Always reliable fine seafood. Spacious restaurant with a few rooms and bar. Raw bar available as well as non-seafood choices for those who want something else. This visit, our two lobster rolls were full of meat and the calamari was some of the best we've had and we eat...
Read moreI hate to give such a low rating as my boyfriend and I have been curious to try this restaurant outfor a few years now. We decided to give it a try one night recently we were craving seafood and we ended up being disappointed. We had the calamari and mussels for apps. The calamari had an odd texture to it and the breading was very thick and oily. The marinara sauce was watery and not flavorful..the mussels I'd say were okay but not great. They were the best thing we had that evening. We needed to request bread and butter. For dinner I ordered the seared scallops which were far from seared, they had seemed just warmed and over seasoned with an odd bright red seasoning on the outside and the inside was nearly raw and the texture was something I could not stomach. The wild rice that came with it was hard and mushy in certain areas and the veggies were frozen and heated with much to much pepper and Italian seasoning. It was banquet hall food at best and I couldn't be more sad because I'm from the shoreline and have moved to this area and wanted to find a decent place near by with quality seafood. My boyfriend ordered the swordfish special which was a small cut of fish with an odd chopped up raw tomato and a crumble type cheese with an olive in it. One sliced olive. The dish was meant to have a tapenade on it and this was not even close to a tapenade. Then drizzled with an oil dressing ? It was such a strange combination. My boyfriend wasnt pleased with his meal but was very hungry and ate the swordfish portion. I couldn't eat my seared scallop meal and was appreciative the waitress took it off our bill. I wish our experience was different but I dont think we will be returning. With that said the atmosphere was quaint and nautical but not tacky. The outside patio looked lovely. Our waitress was kind and attentive and polite. Just purely a food...
Read moreHavent been to Saybrook Fish House in years and more than likely, won't be going back. And maybe I'm getting alot less tolerant but I'd like to enjoy my meal without having to scream across a small table to talk to my two dining partners. It was a Saturday night 6pm, but the noise level was unbearable. Asked for a booth when I made reservations but got a small table for 3 back by the exit door. I was told he didnt have any booths available. Yet where we were sitted was just next to a separate room just with booths and out of about 10 only 3 were occupied. Our waitress was ok but service was slow and we all ordered meals that came with a salad but only one person at the table ordered an appetizer which was the calamari on lettuce. Our other salad (s) never came and she was so busy, we just shared the calamari. Got A bread basket with 3 SMALL rolls and 2 pretzel sticks. Our main meals came about an hour later. I ordered Fish & Chips, my husband Wholeb. Clams and my daughter who had flown in that evening just to have dinner with us, had Surf&Turf. When our server came to clear the plates, she looked at me shocked and asked if anything was wrong bec I had eaten only One piece of fish. Right, I should have said yes it was terrible but did not bec I did not want our guest to feel uncomfortable. The pieces of fish were nice thick pieces But the oil they used to fry them in was old and rancid. My husband later told me that he was really unhappy with his meal bec of the clams being fried in bad oil also. My husband comes from a family who established 2 very well known restaurants in NWCT so we know abit about good cooking. So....I'll give them a 3 only bec my daughter...
