We recently spent a weekend in Carrizozo as a stopover to nearby towns. There are very few restaurants in town these days, and this was the closest to our hotel. When we got there, the atmosphere was not super exciting. The dining room was old and fairly ratty-looking, and I was prepared to be underwhelmed. But, we were pleasantly surprised!

The server (a young man wearing a mask) greeted us and told us we could sit wherever we'd like. We chose a spot under the TV because it was farther away from other people, as we are still trying to distance from others for the safety of our young son.

As soon as we sat down, my negative expectations were thrown out the window! The server got us a high chair, took our drink order and offered to turn down the TV if it was too loud (it was not). He was friendly and attentive; even offering to fill our son's sippy cup that we'd brought with us.

The food was great! My husband had enchiladas and he said they were yummy and the chile was hot, just like he likes it. Our son ordered a corn dog, which had sweet, fluffy batter coating. He gobbled it up. My taco salad was fresh and crunchy and the house-made salsa was so good, I bought a jar to take home!

As soon as we got back to the motel down the road, we realized we'd forgotten our son's sippy cup. I went back to get it and as soon as I walked in, I saw our server carrying it over to the door.

This place doesn't look like much, but they clearly have their priorities in order. Good food and excellent service are more important than fancy tables and chairs, anyway. If we're ever in town again,...

Today I went to the four winds restaurant over here in Carrizozo it seem to be OK but as I walked in the door the door itself was just covered in the smudge marks and fingerprints inside and out and was not clean the floor was not washed or mopped or cleaned and you have to pretend that it was important to keep us safe healthy distance but avoiding the sanitation health that a normal restaurant would actually cover I already a Decker sandwich out and when I got it it was on a small loaf of bread slice diagonally the lettuce was brown on the corner the bacon that was in the gameLook like it was bacon from the morning because it didn’t look fresh and the grease was already dried on it so he’s been prepared a lot earlier and was overly done so it wasn’t fresh I was very unhappy and I would read it as a one and less than one with the dirt and the grime and the uncleanly healthy conditions of that restaurant I brought the attention to the waitress about the door asked her if it was my glasses or was the door dirty she just chuckled and shrugged it off I did nothing to improve the condition of the restaurant they are welcome carpet on the floor had a layer of felt up Graham and dust and dirt that has been there...

This place is hard to see as it sits right on the corner of the four-way STOP. But, MAN! I'm so glad we saw it and stopped for a quick bite on our way back to Colorado. I ordered the MONSTER HAMBURGER and WOW, WOW, WOW!!! The BEST HAMBURGER I've had ever. Not BIG. It's HUMONGOUS! I can eat Big Burgers. But, WOW. I had to walk in circles around this thing! SUPER DELICIOUS! My wife and son also ate every bit of it. Me, of course I ate it all. So, my wife had to drive I was so amazed I forgot to take a picture. But we will ALWAYS stop here every time we pass by. I know the building may say it's for lease or sale, but I'm just glad we stopped and that it's still open... Thanks for the experience. We will...

We stopped here since we could sit outside with our dog. There are two options for sitting outside, and it all has plenty of bird droppings on it. The picnic table had spider webs, so we chose the small round table. I found an upside down chair and sat in that since it was cleaner, having been covered from the birds. My child didn't like her food, my husband said his was fine, and I really liked the chile rellano from the variety plate I got. It was crispy and good. We all thought the water tasted bad. The gas station across the street blasts ads, that was a little annoying. I'm guessing if you sit inside, it's a better experience. Our waitress was nice and chatted a bit when I went in to pay.

We stopped in for a quick lunch, choosing this place mostly because our first two choices in town were closed. But I was glad we ended up here, because our food was great! The patty melt was hot and juicy without being sloppy or mushy, and the fries were crispy on the outside and soft inside. My “monster burger” was huge, but really tasty with green chiles (a must in NM!), grilled onions, bacon, and more. I’d eat here again. The only downsides were the bathrooms were a little rough (but clean) and the interior was a little worn-out looking. The service was friendly, although slow (but I totally understand because they were down a server and only had two folks doing their best to get food out.)

You may have hard time finding entrance. It’s a big dirty black door to the left of the door with the sign “open.” Four Winds is a fine diner, with friendly staff! Food is ok. Not great or gourmet, just ok. Clean inside, but dirty outside. Pros: - Local vibe - Wide selection of meals - Friendly and attentive staff - Filling meals - Clean tables, utensils and all of the interior Cons: - Unclean on the outside - Difficult to find entrance - Quality of ingredients is manageable, but I couldn’t eat like this daily
