This place is the platonic ideal of an old-school doughnut shop, and a visit here is, without question, worth the detour off of I-90 or I-29. These are real doughnuts made by real bakers who clearly have a lot of respect for both their product and their customers.
The doughnuts (including the understandably famous zebra) aren't simply delivery mechanisms for huge amounts of sugar. Unlike the aggressively sweet doughnuts you grab at a grocery store and gas station, you can taste the wheat and yeast and cocoa in Royal Bake Shop's pastries.
These aren't sugar bombs and they're not delicate pâtisserie: they're straightforward, solid, homey and tremendously delicious. Plus, the service is some of the friendliest, warmest and most welcoming I've ever experienced in South Dakota.
This place isn't just a gem: it's seriously one of South...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA friend and I stopped here when we were in the area because we had heard so much about the zebra donuts. We also tried several of their other donuts. Frankly, neither of us can understand all the hype this place gets. The zebra donut was very heavy and dense. The tiger tail, which is basically the zebra donut but in a twist, was better. The apple fritter was doughy and dense and didnāt have a whole lot of flavor. The basic glazed donuts were good. My favorite thing that I sampled was the raspberry roll, which is like a cinnamon roll, but filled with raspberry jam. A few seconds in the microwave and that was very good. So it really depends on what you order. But their signature zebra donuts were a big disappointment. Iām giving this place four stars because the service was so friendly. And they have...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreLocal SD treasure. I don't have words for the delicious Cream Delight donuts - they turn me into Homer Simpson. My wife and I used to live in the area and went here often. Now we are down in Omaha, but still make plans to stop here when we are up in SD. If this place was in Omaha it would kill. One extremely important caveat. Like many other bakeries, you need to get here early for the best selection. If you roll in at 10am or later the selection will likely be limited due to the demand and early on they do have a nice variety to choose from, so better to get here early and start out your day. If you are traveling in I-80, Centerville is only about 15 minutes west - town is fortunate to have such a fantastic bakery š Oh, and free coffee with your donut -...
