El Cazador — Restaurant in Chatham

Newly remodeled interior, great food, decent prices, they have a very nice selection of authentic Mexican & some American dishes, they make really good mixed drinks, & their beer selection is decent, the deserts are good but there are only a limited number of choices. The staff absolutely makes this place though, they are so friendly & most of them have become apart of our community over their many years here. Most of the staff know me & my entire family by name (& there are quite a few of us). We love visiting here for a family dinner, date night, girls night, or special occasions whatever this place is a good fit for just about anything. It is especially nice if you don’t want to drive all the way to Lynchburg or if you want to get your family together somewhere close by. A few of us decided to celebrate my daughters 15th Birthday there & we weren’t expecting but a few people to show up we arrived there unannounced about lunchtime & we ended up having quite a few people come join us throughout our meal so it ended up being a fairly large group, but they were happy to have like they always are & they went out there way to make sure we enjoy our visit!! Quite frankly, I don’t leave reviews often unless something was really good, or really bad. In this case, this place was absolutely terrible. It’s worth your time & money to go 40mins away to get food if you are from out of town— that’s how bad this place was. I am not from here, and Mexican food is hardly ever bad. The food, fine. Not good, not bad. Except the waiter forgot about me for 30mins until I came & asked if I could order. No worries, I’m not in a rush. After I ordered, did not see him after, however. Don’t know if it was break time or what, but I worked in restaurants for years. Usually you are taken care of by somebody, right? I was waiting for cheese dip, no server, nobody. Went to ask for help, AGAIN, was laughed at. Been here 1.5hrs, passing through, & am writing the review in this restaurant. Do better. I’m a very good tipper, and patient. Maybe they saw a single person & thought the tip wasn’t worth it, don’t know. But this was very frustrating, and I wish I could have up & walked out. Waited 40 minutes for a table for 6. Not an issue in Chatham on a Friday, I expected to wait. Was seated, chips, salsa served. 15 minutes pass, no drinks, no menu. A waiter stopped to ask if we had ordered drinks, no. 5 minutes pass, no drinks, no menu. I went out to smoke, came back in behind a couple. By then our drinks arrived but no menu. They eventually brought 5 menus for our 6 top table and seemed annoyed because we asked for a 6th menu. The couple that entered before me, had menus and mixed drinks at this point, 6 minutes into their seating. At this point I was too mad to eat. I ended up getting a cheeseburger. $6.95 for a paper thin frozen patty. The only thinner part of the meal was the cheese slice. Tomato, lettuce and bun were thicker. This was our first in house dining in Chatham since moving here in August 2022, and at this establishment, it will be our last. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
