A friend strongly recommended I try Oak House. My wife and I arrived with high expectations, and even that high bar was massively surpassed. From first walking in, Payton served and greeted us with warmth, friendliness and professional care to make sure everything we ordered came out in order. Payton did a wonderful job to guide us through the menu, which had so many enticing options.
For appetizers, we had the fried green tomatoes and crab cakes. Even simple dishes were prepared with unique deliberation. The tomatoes were cut thinner, the batter had a slight heat and seasoning, making this staple southern dish far more fresh, bright, and a delicate highlight of the flavors.
For dinner, we had the ribeyee steak and chicken picatta. The steak was fantastic, highest quality available, with a side of scalloped potatoes. Even the sides include the chef's flair, almost feels like showing off for the benefit of our experience.
As great as the steak was, the chicken picatta was a show stealer. The best chicken I've ever had, hands down. The best chicken picatta, full stop. I ordered with extra capers, Payton was mindful to put them on the side. Even the capers were flash fried, a simple ingredient transformed from a small burst of vinegar to an umami flavor that carries more like an aged cheese, transforming the brunt edge of capers to a soft element of the whole experience. The pasta was great, though I would need to eat the dish again and focus to get past the chicken. As well as explore more of the menu, the sea bass looked amazing.
For dessert, we ordered key lime pie and the white chocolate bread pudding. Everything was made with an amazing attention to detail, precise balance of flavors. From top to bottom, every aspect of our experience was simply a treat. Payton was attentive and helpful, we loved the the meal. Travis, an owner, took time to visit every table, he shared his fascinating history which lead to him opening a restaurant, and spent time to really engage and hear his customers thoughts on the experience and meal. It was wonderful, the price points are pretty unreal for what you get. This place is head and shoulders above any competition. A must try. We will be...
Read moreI saw Oak House on Yelp as the top 3 choice for steakhouses in Birmingham and I saw it had five stars on Google and decided to give it a go. First, the service was amazing. Our waiter David L. Was outstanding! He was the best part of the evening. He was on top of everything and left us wanting for nothing. The food was packed with flavor. I had the Ribeye and my wife had the Chicken Piccata. My wife loved her dish and I loved the flavor of my ribeye. The only downside to the visit was that I requested a medium rare steak and the first time it came out medium and the second time it came out it was rare. I was as gracious and understanding as could be, however the manager tried to convince me the mistake had something to do with the lighting in the kitchen and acted put off with the whole situation as though I should be okay with being served an over and undercooked steak. It’s hard to give Oak House five stars because they have a hard time cooking a medium rare steak and their management are not accommodating to their guests. However, the flavors and the service of our waiter kept this visit as at four stars. I am not sure if my wife and I will return, but if we do it will be because of David...
Read moreMy wife and I came here last night for our 8th year anniversary. My wife and I are borderline chefs, so if we got out to eat, we expect a lot. With that being said, Oak house wasn't that great and way way too overpriced for mediocre. We had the fried green tomatoes, wedge salad, I had the ribeye w/ mac'n'cheese. My wife had the pasta. The fried green tomatoes (imo) were plain, nothing really wowed me about them. Presentation was nice but that is it! The Wedge salad(s) were different imo, I was expecting "farm to table" for these prices. Let me clarify before I continue; we do not consume alcohol, I expect if I'm paying 65.00 for a 14oz steak it had better be Wagyu and amazing. Cost isnt the complaint, it's the expectation I have for that price. The steak was good, but not worth 65.00; I can cook a Publix steak better. The Mac'n'cheese was nothining more than cheddar cheese and milk. Why not put bacon or cream cheese in it? Not impressed in the least. My wife's pasta was literally the same exact thing but with orange bell peppers and chicken. We paid 185.00 for our meal. If you wanna keep up with the Jones and blow your money this is your place. If not, don't make the drive it's not...
