Maybe not an objective 5 star, but for the area I have a pretty good sense that this is the best restaurant in the north Lake Almanor area. We were visiting Lassen and staying in Chester in September 2020 and there was a serious dearth of restaurants worth eating at, let alone take food away from. Covid or no, the Italian place around the corner was the only other place that ranked. There was one other place that seemed to have a reasonable pub menu with good reviews in Chester, but when we got there we didn’t even enter because it looked like a non-stop super-spreader party. No masks and everyone was shoulder to shoulder. Hard pass.
But anyway, The Red Onion: great setting in lovely Westwood, friendly service, a cozy bar with a good drinks selection, and the rare ribeye steak I had there was fairly epic. My wife had the Salmon which was perfectly prepared as well on the skin making it oh-so flavorful. Get some veggies there because while the 4 stakes of asparagus that came with my meal were perfect, I kind felt guilty just eating a massive steal and potatoes.
I don’t write a lot of Google reviews but we were so grateful to find this place I just have to send them some props and so other people seeking vittles who crave a well-made dinner in a nice setting know here to go. It’s amazing how much you need a decent restaurant when one is hard to come by!
Only comment: the generic country music that constantly plays there (I was there twice) is pretty weak. I swear I heard ‘Werewolves of London’ come on but after the intro there were bland country lyrics that sounded exactly Warren Zevon’s classic song note for note, right down to the backup singers. Lies! Anyway, Red Onion, if you’re reading this... please mix the music up a little at least! I’m sure the wait staff would be grateful too. Otherwise I’ve got nothing but...
Read moreCame here a few months ago for a celebration. Hubby and I both ordered the filet mignon and the waitress had a difficult time taking our order. Husband asked for medium rare and she began on a color code dialog, saying okay pink. Husband told the waitress no, medium rare. After a 10 minute Abbott and Costello skit, Hubby said to let the chef know medium rare and he'll know how to cook it. 20 minutes later, our dinner plates arrived and hubby's filet was well done! Ugh, we had the waitress take his plate back and redo it explaining once again that medium rare is where it has a nice brown sear on outside with red color on inside not pink or brown. When I had finished with my dinner, husband's dinner finally arrived. He cut into it and it was perfect. We asked for a to go box and took his dinner home. I want to add that the weird looking waitress, not exaggerating, she looked like a funky monkey, was blatantly flirting with my husband and acted like I didn't exist. She was very RUDE and...
Read moreVisited this past weekend. Menu was varied and had something for everyone. Note the menu is "daily" which can be a positive but what you see on the website may not be the menu you receive. Food was very, very good. Well prepared and high quality. Atmosphere was louder than expected - large open dining room with limited sound dampening. Service wasn't good. First round of drinks were delivered after the appetizer. Second round of drinks (wine and beer) were ordered midway through mains and only after we finished, server advised they were just being poured - we cancelled the order. Server also advised that one of our main course selections was sold out only after we finished our appetizer. Should have been told at the time of ordering or immediately after. For the price point, overall just barely satisfied. Simple fix by setting higher...
